Marvel’s Black Widow made Florence Pugh a household name following her big screen debut as Yelena Belova. However, it seems as though many of her friends in the indie world weren’t happy with her newfound notoriety.
Florence Pugh was by no means unknown before she landed the role as Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Prior to her appearance in Black Widow, Pugh was one of the biggest name in art films with projects like Midsommar and Little Women. While many fans welcomed this transition with open arms, Pugh says that many people in the indie film scene were pissed at her decision to join the world of blockbusters:
“So many people in the indie film world were really pissed off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,’” she told TIME. “And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies. It’s just people are watching them now. You just have to be a bit more organized with your schedule.”
The frustrations of her former cohorts are understandable to anyone familiar with the industry. With how much commitment MCU projects take from staying in shape to appearing in multiple projects, its understandable people may be worried that she would star in less indie projects. However, Florence Pugh’s continued involvement in projects like A Good Person and The Wonder while continuing to appear in Marvel Studios projects like Thunderbolts prove that she’s far from leaving the indie world behind.
Who is attached to the Thunderbolts movie?
During Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation in July, it was revealed that Jake Schreier would direct the upcoming Thunderbolts project. Eric Pearson, the writer for Black Widow, had previously written a draft of the script, with Lee Sung Jin taking over for rewrites.
The Thunderbolts film features an impressive cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfuss as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen as the Ghost, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. Harrison Ford has recently been cast as Thunderbolt Ross, taking over for the late William Hurt. Ayo Edebir and Steven Yeun are also confirmed to be part of the project.
