DC Studios co-head James Gunn declared Michael Rosenbaum the “best Lex Luthor” during an interview on the Inside of You podcast, where the actor himself was the host. However, Gunn was ambiguous about the presence of Luthor in the upcoming DC Universe movie Superman: Legacy.
During the interview, James Gunn neither confirmed nor denied the potential involvement of Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. As the discussion continued, however, Gunn took an interesting turn to appreciate Michael Rosenbaum’s performance as Lex Luthor in the Superman prequel series Smallville. Gunn gave a wholehearted commendation, stating, “You are the best Lex, let’s admit it. We know you’re the best Lex.”
The praise was further reiterated with, “I’m not joking, you’re undeniably the best Lex. Definitely.” This compliment not only solidified James Gunn’s admiration for Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor portrayal but also brought back nostalgic memories of Rosenbaum’s successful run on Smallville.
Michael Rosenbaum was given the opportunity to return as Lex Luthor in the five-part Arroweverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, which revealed that his character became the President of the United States in the Smallville universe. The actor passed on the offer because Warner Bros. offered him no script or information on when he would be filming his scenes, among other reasons.
Superman’’’s DC Universe Future
Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. James Gunn promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
