CAPTAIN MARVEL gets a new costume and a new creative team

This week, writer Kelly Thompson‘s fifty-plus-issue run writing Marvel’s ongoing Captain Marvel series came to an end. With a new movie on the horizon for Carol Danvers, though, it was only a matter of time before a relaunch was announced, and sure enough today Marvel unveiled a new creative team – and a new costume – for the character.

Writer Alyssa Wong and artist Jan Bazaldua will helm the new Captain Marvel ongoing series, which is set to launch in October. The series will also see Carol don a new costume designed by Jen Bartel. 

Here’s how Marvel describes the relaunched series:

CAPTAIN MARVEL will see the rise of a new overwhelming omniversal entity who recognizes Carol is the only hero who can stand against its’ vision of total annihilation. After being ambushed and trapped, Carol will need to rely on the reluctant help of a young ally who holds the key to victory! Ripe with high-stakes adventure, cosmic mystery, and epic feats, it’s an exciting new status quo worthy of Marvel’s brightest stars! 

HIGHEST, FURTHEST, FASTEST! Carol Danvers is one of the powerhouses of the Marvel Universe, a woman capable of harnessing the energy of the sun. So if you’re coming for Earth? She’s the first one you take off the board. Someone’s figured just how to do just that. Introducing a new supporting cast and villains both beloved and dangerously fresh as Wong and Bazaldua’s exhilarating new series kicks off!

The new Captain Marvel series is the latest Marvel work for writer Alyssa Wong, who has been writing the current Star Wars: Doctor Aphra series since its launch in 2020, and has also written Iron Fist and Deadpool for the publisher. It’s their first pairing with Jan Bazaldua, who has worked on books like Mr. & Mrs. X, Spider-Man, and X-Force for Marvel. In a statement announcing the new series, the two creators expressed their enthusiasm at taking over helming the adventures of Carol Danvers:

“I’m so excited to be writing Captain Marvel!” Wong said. “Carol is such an iconic character with a rich history, and I can’t wait to add to her story. It’s an honor to work with Jan and I hope everyone enjoys what we’ve got coming!”

“Captain Marvel is one of my favorite female characters, that’s why I’m very excited to draw her,” Bazaldua added. “I have always seen her as a very self-confident woman with nothing she cannot face, and not just because she has superpowers, but because she has inner strength. That’s what I really enjoy about her and why I really appreciate this opportunity!”

Captain Marvel’s previous suit was designed by Jamie McKelvie, famously the result of a bet between the artist and writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, who wrote Carol’s first adventures as Captain Marvel when Carol assumed the role in 2012. McKelvie’s design has since become the basis for the MCU version of Captain Marvel, as played by Brie Larson. Carol has worn a few other costumes in the comics over the past decade, notably the ‘Dark Captain Marvel’ suit designed by Lee Garbett for a story by Garbett and Thompson, but Bartel’s redesign is the first full-time new look for the character.

Captain Marvel #1 is set to arrive in stores and digitally on Wednesday, October 25th.
