New smartphone apps are created all the time, and Chai has exploded as one of the most popular ones around. There are the big apps everyone uses — including Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, etc. But there are also smaller ones that seem to come out of nowhere and catch the world by storm. Locket Widget, for example, blew up as a fun way to share photos on friends’ home screens. NoteIt and Prequel also went viral, catching the attention of people on social media and rising to the top download charts on the App Store.

Something similar also happened with an app called ‘Chai.’ Chai’s been around since 2021, but it only really became popular in 2022. As for what the app is, it’s essentially a place to have text conversations with AI chatbots (Chai = chat + AI). AI chatbots aren’t anything new, but as artificial intelligence becomes more advanced and accessible, it’s not surprising to see one of these apps get so much buzz.

How To Use The Chai AI Chat App

Chai app

Using the Chai app is pretty simple. First, download the Chai app on your iPhone or Android phone. Open the app store on your smartphone, search for ‘Chai,’ and download the app called ‘Chai – Chat with AI bots’ (or ‘Chai – Chat with AI Friends’ on Android). After downloading the app, users are asked to sign in using a Facebook, Google, or Apple account. Once this is complete and you confirm your username and avatar, you’re ready to start chatting.

Navigating the Chai app is fairly simple. Pick a chatbot from the app and type a message to begin chatting with it. You can pick a chatbot from the leaderboards section which displays the top AI bots. Alternatively, tap the round chat button at the top of the screen to find new bots. Each bot comes with its own profile picture and description, and you can see its star rating and how many conversations it’s had with other users. Alternatively, tap the search button to search for bots.

All your chats are saved in the chats section, which is the square chat icon at the top of the screen. You can swipe left on any chat to delete it, or tap ‘Delete All’ to delete all chats in the app. That’s pretty much all there is to Chai. Pick a bot, start chatting, and see where the conversation takes you. The only thing to keep in mind is that Chai limits users to sending up to 70 messages every three hours. Unfortunately, the Chai app is filled with ads, and every time you tap on a new chatbot, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get to the chat screen. If you want to get rid or the ads or send more messages, you’ll need to pay $13.99/month or $134.99/year for Chai Premium to get unlimited messages.

Chai App Vs. ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s chatbot, and can work in a variety of ways, depending on what you want to use it for. You can have a casual conversation with the chatbot, ask it questions, use it to help you with work or a project, or even ask it to help you plan a vacation. While ChatGPT can develop somewhat of a personality based on longer conversations, it’s essentially an informational chatbot that scours the internet for knowledge.

The Chai app, on the other hand, has various AI chatbots with distinct personality types. Some bots are funny, some are evil, and some are romantic. Opening a chat with a specific chatbot will display a short preview of their character, and their responses will be tailored accordingly. If you want to have fun conversations with AI chatbots, the Chai app is worth checking out – just don’t expect it to be anything like ChatGPT.
