Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was a triumph in inspiring viewers around the world to come up with their own “Spider-sonas”. Chris Miller, one of the film’s writers and producers, confirms that this was the goal of the entire trilogy.
If there was one thing to take away from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel Across the Spider-Verse, it’s that anyone could be under the mask. The first film featured Miles Morales coming to terms with this fact through his fight against Kingpin. Now, Chris Miller has confirmed that the trilogy is also meant to help audiences come to terms with that fact.
“With that mask that covers an entire body and face, you can imagine yourself in that suit,” Miller told AP News. “The whole goal of this trilogy was to let everybody feel like it could be me, and show as many different types of people — and animals — being Spider-Man as possible.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse alone showed off hundreds of races, genders, creeds, and body types in the Spider Society. From the reinvention of Pavitr Prabhakar as India’s Spider-Man to a Black Anarchist in Hobie Brown being a stand-out star of the film, it truly proved anyone could be Spider-Man. Fans can only imagine what sort of Spider-people await in Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham, Across The Spider-Verse also features the voice talents of Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jason Schwartzman, Rachel Dratch, Shea Whigham and Jorma Taccone. Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Christina Steinberg are producing the upcoming movie alongside Lord and Miller, who also worked on its predecessor.
The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse synopsis reads as follows: “Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga… After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”
