Warner Bros. may a no-show at next week’s SDCC but even with a SAG-AFTRA strike looming in the background, it’s still hyping up the upcoming Superman: Legacy film from writer/director James Gunn. On the heels of the news that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been cast as Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane, exclusives from Vanity Fair and THR have revealed some even more exciting Superman: Legacy casting news.
According to a Vanity Fair exclusive, the film has added Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Though younger compared to her co-stars, Merced has proven herself over the years in projects such as Sicario: Day of the Soldado and the Dora and the Lost City of Gold live-action movie. The actress is certainly leveling up in the role of Hawkgirl Gathegi is no stranger to superheroes, having played Darwin in X-Men: First Class. And while the character was unceremonously killed off, despite his mutant power allowing him to survive anything, hopefully Gathegi will have a better chance to shine in the DC sandbox.
Fillion’s “geek cred” goes without saying and much like Michael Rooker, has pretty much become a James Gunn regular performer. In fact, he’s already made his DCU debut in Gunn’s 2021 The Suicide Squad playing the character T.D.K. better known as The Detachable Kid. Though he’s voiced Green Lantern Hal Jordan in numerous animated projects in the past decade, he seems just as equally suited to portray the cocky and hot-headed Guy Gardner.
Meanwhile, Barry fans will be delighted to hear courtesy of THR has revealed that Anthony Carrigan, best known for his role as Chechen mobster NoHo Hank in the critically acclaimed HBO series, has been cast as Rex Mason a.k.a. Metamorpho.
As noted by fans and observers, for a supposed Superman solo project, the film does feature quite a number of Justice League characters in supporting roles. Some are beginning to wonder if this is actually a Justice League film in disguise of a Superman movie. Whatever the case, Gunn has more than proven himself and has yet to disappoint fans.
Superman: Legacy arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.
