Okay, I’m a bit late posting this Top Comics to Buy for July 26, but forgive me, I was at San Diego Comic-Con and my brain is mushy and exhausted. On my flights to and from, however, I did manage to read some comics, many comics, in fact, and I’ve picked five that I was into as recommendations below, along with the usual set of lists. Enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for July 26, 2023
Neighbors #5Writer: Jude Ellison S. DoyleArtist: Letizia CadoniciColorist: Alessandro SantoroLetterer: Becca CareyPublisher: BOOM! StudiosCunnanock, a town determined to tear the Gowdie family apart, can no longer hide the evil force behind the horror. As the Gowdies come face-to-face with it, the true details of Oliver’s trauma comes to light, while Casey becomes even more erratic and dangerous. Will help from an unexpected source be enough to save their family? Why It’s Cool: I’ve written about liking this family-focused horror take throughout its run, and now I’m happy to report this book sticks its ending. I’ll be thinking about this series for some time.Price: $4.99
Ribbon Queen #1Writer:Garth EnnisPenciler: Jacen BurrowsInker:Guillermo OrtegoColorist: Dan BrownLetterer: Rob SteenThere is something ancient and terrible loose in the world of men. Something that hates them with burning passion, that bears a grudge born of ten thousand years. Something that wants its revenge. NYPD Detective Amy Sun has a problem: Three years ago, a young woman was rescued from a serial killer by a police tactical unit. Now she’s dead, and Amy has a bad feeling that the SWAT team leader is responsible. As she investigates the existence of a corrupt cabal within her own precinct, Detective Sun soon discovers that there is something else on their trail – a force of vengeance older than the human race itself has awoken, invoked by the tormented murder victim in the weeks before she died, and is out for the blood of the guilty, who soon find themselves suffering a fate more gruesome than anything they could have dreamed of. Why It’s Cool: This one is an engaging mystery from its start, building to a wild cliffhanger of an ending that I don’t even want to hint about here. I couldn’t put this one down after I started it, and I highly recommend giving it a shot. Chances are good it might grab you, too.Price: $3.99
Seasons of Teeth #4Writer: Dan WattersArtist: Sebastian CabrolColorist: Dan JacksonLetterer: Nate PiekosPublisher: BOOM! StudiosShaken from his experiences, Andrew only wants to go home, despite the swirling rumors of his Pulitzer eligibility. But home will have to wait, as the final, deadly season pursues and ravages life wherever it can find it-including his.Alone but sheltered from the literal thrashing of Winter, will Andrew find the warmth and redemption necessary to complete his photo series, or will his efforts be in vain? Why It’s Cool: Featuring one of the freshest concepts for a horror story I’ve seen in some time, Seasons of Teeth wraps up this week, and the finale was an easy choice for this list of Top Comics to Buy for July 26. The whole book was fantastic — get it in trade if you for some reason missed the singles.Price: $4.99
Travelling to Mars #7Writer: Mark RussellArtist: Roberto “Dakar” MeliColorist: Chiara Di FranciaLetterer: Mattia GentiliPublisher: AblazeRoy says his final good-byes to the people of Earth as he prepares to land on Mars. He thinks back to his wedding day and wonders if he will hear from the love of his life before breaking off all contact with the Earth. Why It’s Cool: Traveling to Mars remains one of my favorite books written by Mark Russell, which is really saying something. It’s just been such a forlorn and personal near-future sci-fi comic that also serves as a satire. I’m going to keep recommending it until it’s through. Price: $3.99
Ultimate Invasion #2Writer: Jonathan HickmanPencils: Bryan HitchInks: Andrew CurrieColors: Alex SinclairLetterer: Joe CaramagnaPublisher: Marvel ComicsSuperstar creators Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch team up! The Illuminati must form once again to stop the Maker from his plans to destroy – or perhaps rebuild – the universe, with Miles Morales at the center of it all! Bryan’s work on THE ULTIMATES helped redefine super hero comics for the 2000s – wait until you see what he and Jonathan have in store for this decade! Including new data pages by Jonathan Hickman – plus exclusive behind-the-scenes material on the world-building that has gone into this project! Why It’s Cool: Whether or not you’ve been paying close attention to recent Marvel continuity, this comic functions as a fun and complex sci-fi story with tinges of body horror throughout. I’ve enjoyed the first two issues quite a bit.Price: $8.99
