Summary
New Smallville fan art imagines Tom Welling returning as an older Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman. One of the most popular Superman properties of all time is Smallville, the ultimate Clark Kent prequel story, as it told how Krypton’s last son became the Man of Steel. Smallville essentially paved the way for the Arrowverse on The CW, which became the network’s follow-up superhero chapter after Welling’s series ended in 2011.
While Smallville may have been off the air for over a decade, fans are still imagining what Welling’s Superman would be up to if the show ever returned. One fan in particular, Buffy2Ville, shared a gallery of fan art with Welling as an older Man of Steel on Instagram.
The post also includes various cast members from Smallville and what they could look like today in a potential continuation. The list includes Erica Durance as Lois Lane, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Justin Hartley as the Green Arrow, and Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang.
Buffy2Ville also shared a few other designs of Welling in the iconic Superman costume, something fans only got to see briefly in the Smallville series finale. While Welling, along with Durance, did reprise their roles during Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, it was revealed that Clark had at some point given up his powers in order to have a family with Lois.
Will A Smallville Revival Ever Happen?
In the current age of revivals and reboots, Smallville has long been a show audiences have speculated about returning to screens. While the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still going on, anything is possible once they come to an end. A Smallville return to The CW would, however, at this point be extremely unlikely given the end of the Arrowverse and the new owners taking the network in a new direction.
The closest fans may ever get to a proper Smallville revival would be if the animated continuation is actually going forward. For almost two years now, Welling and Rosenbaum have been talking about how they are developing a Smallville animated series, with the original show creators being involved. However, currently no new updates have emerged about it, including when and where it would air.
Whether it is in animation, or even live-action, seeing Smallville come back today would be huge, especially if it shows Clark’s chapters as Superman. Whether or not they would adapt the Smallville season 11 tie-in comic, which showed Clark in his full Superman glory, a revival would do well, especially if it landed on a platform like Max, which would easily bring more eyeballs to it than The CW could at this point. For now, Smallville fans can relive the entire series on home media as well as on streaming, and even check out the season 11 comic run.
