As August arrives, so too does Weekend Reading 172. What will you be reading as you avoid the heat? The Beat wants to hear from you! Let us know, right here in the comment section.

Weekend Reading 172
Weekend Reading 172: Super Dinosaur.

TAIMUR DAR: Chalk it up to falling back in love with Invincible post-SDCC, but I’ve found myself in a bit of a Robert Kirkman kick. I’ve always admired the prolific creator but I find myself with a better appreciation of his work. To that end, I’m diving into the deep end with different Kirkman projects. Since I dig Invincible, the first volumes of Astounding Wolf-Man and Super Dinosaur from Kirkman and artist Jason Howard seem like good starting points. Likewise, a few Invincible regular characters like Cecil and Donald debuted in his Brit series with artist Tony Moore so I’m also going to read the first trade collection. Moreover, after the first season of the Invincible animated series was released, I started reading the comic but stopped around the halfway point when life got in the way. While I remember most of it, I’ve started reading Invincible from the beginning with the goal of finishing it by the time the second season debuts towards the end of the year.

Weekend Reading 172: The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix.

CY BELTRAN: In between volumes of Ms. Marvel and whichever Stephen King book I’m on this week (Cujo still), I’ve remembered that six months ago I was reading thru a large chunk of 90s X-adjacent books, and so I’ve jumped back into that with The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, by Scott Lobdell and Gene Ha (with a talented group of inkers and letterers). I’m a big fan of this mini as it is, but it’s been interesting watching Cable’s backstory and connection to the Summers family.

Weekend Reading 172: Case Closed Vol. 5

DEAN SIMONS: Currently on a brief trip so no 2000 AD catchup this weekend. During the week, however, I blitzed the remainder of the 2022 issues and the 100-page X-Mas prog (complete with Kevin O’Neill’s last comic work before his passing – Bonjo From Beyond the Stars, written by Garth Ennis). Over the weekend I will likely be perusing the fifth volume of Gosho Aoyama’s Case Closed/Detective Conan – translated and adapted by Naoko Ameniya and Joe Yamazaki – and dipping back into my reread of Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Bendis and Mark Bagley. Reached the Ultimate Venom saga. And for extra mirth – I continue my intermittent sampling of the Cinebook translations of Franquin’s Gaston Legaffe/Gomer Goof via volume 1’s Mind the Goof, translated by Jerome Saincantin.
