Director William Friedkin has passed away at the age of 87 in Los Angeles. Born August 29, 1935, the filmmaker rose to fame during the New Hollywood movement of the 1970s by directing The French Connection and The Exorcist. The 1971 crime thriller won five Academy Awards, including Best Director for Friedkin followed by the famous horror film from 1973 which earned him another Oscar nomination for Best Director.
Per Variety, the director’s death was confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of Friedkin’s wife Sherry Lansing. He was 87 years old.
