‘Tulsa King’ Spinoff Starring Samuel L. Jackson Gets New Title

Blue Beetle is set to be the first film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Despite this, the film is set to include a reference to Henry Cavill’s time as Superman in Man of Steel.

James Gunn has come under fire in recent months for trying to sever ties with the old guard of DC Studios for his new DC Universe, including recasting Henry Cavill with David Corenswet for Superman: Legacy. However, it seems as though Blue Beetle may be caught in the center of things, as director Angel Manuel Soto confirms the film references Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel:

“Waking up in Mexico to the news that [Zack] Snyder wants to see it too, a director that I respect so much, that his films are an immense influence,” Manuel Soto told Nestor Bentancor. “Even in ‘Blue Beetle,’ there are some references to ‘Man of Steel’ that we made out of honor and respect for the work and art of Zack Snyder.”

It’s no shock Blue Beetle includes references to formerly canon DC Studios projects like Man of Steel given the film was being developed for Max when Henry Cavill was still cast as Superman. Though given James Gunn has seen the film, the references likely don’t clash with his DC Universe plans, and it’s possible David Corenswet’s version of the character went through similar circumstances, allowing the reference to please both sets of fans.

Who is DC’s Blue Beetle?

Blue Beetle is one of DC’s lesser-known heroes, but he has a dedicated fanbase nonetheless. Created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski, Blue Beetle has gone through several iterations over the years. The Jaime Reyes version of the character was introduced during the events of 2006’s Infinite Crisis and quickly became a fan-favorite.

In the pages of DC Comics, Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas. Jaime discovers a scarab beetle-shaped device that bonds with his body, giving him access to an advanced suit of armor and various powers. He becomes the latest in a long line of Blue Beetles and must learn to balance his newfound abilities with his everyday life.

Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The full cast of the movie also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillén.
