Despite having a slow climb at the box office, Blue Beetle has been a smash hit among audiences. The film’s director Angel Manuel Soto reveals the one thing fans need to ensure happen for them to get a sequel.
Blue Beetle was originall made to go straight to the Max streaming service before regime changes at Warner Bros. Discovery set the film for the big screen. The movie has struggled at the box office following recent DC Studios failures like The Flash and Black Adam, but has found generally positive reception among fans. According to director Angel Manuel Soto, if the fans want more of Jaime Reyes, the film needs to make the studio money:
“The way the machine works, the [first] movie needs to make money for them to put more money in, but for us, we’ve always seen it that way,” Soto told Yahoo. “We love the story so much. We believe in the product so much. We believe in an actor so much. We couldn’t help but think about where his journey was going to go while we were creating this film…So is it wish fulfillment? Are we calling it out to the universe? Sure.”
Most fans would say it’s obvious that Blue Beetle needs to make money to get a sequel, but it’s more complicated than many believe. The actual cost of films at DC Studios and other major companies are incredibly opaque, making it impossible to tell how much the film would need to make at the box office without insider information. In addition, most box office numbers don’t take into account merchandise sales, which historically have subsidized superhero properties. The only thing fans can do to make sure Blue Beetle gets a sequel is support it any way they can.
