David Ayer has been a loud voice against studio interference after the disaster that was 2016’s Suicide Squad. He recently took to social media to explain why he supported the original studio cut desptie his feelings.

David Ayer has gone on record to say that the version of Suicide Squad that released in theaters is not the movie he wanted to make, largely pointing the finger at studio interference for the film’s reception. However, many people have pointed out that, at the time, Ayer was an outspoken advocate for the studio’s cut of the film. The director took to social media to clarify his actions, stating that’s just how the business works:

It’s show biz baby ????????

Gotta go out there and sell the product no matter what.

Doesn’t mean I wasn’t dying inside doing it.

We were all incredibly hurt; the cast, the producers; when the embargo lifted on the reviews.

It’s certainly understandable that someone would support a movie they didn’t fully believe in it if it was their job. However, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad serves as a prime example when studios distort the vision of writers, actors, and directors just to enhance their bottom line. Fans can only hope the Ayer Cut is released sooner rather than later.

Is A David Ayer cut of Suicide Squad coming?

David Ayer’s journey with Suicide Squad has been a topic of discussion for a while now, primarily due to the perceived chasm between his original intentions and the end product that hit theaters. Through various interactions, Ayer has voiced his disappointment and frustrations regarding the radical shifts in the movie’s narrative and tone, influenced by studio decisions.

It’s currently unknown when or if the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad will be released. If it does, it will likely be categorized under the “Elseworlds” banner of films, which includes any projects not canon to the main DC Universe being constructed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Current projects in this category include Joker: Folie à Deux and The Batman: Part II.

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
