September has arrived, and it’s brought Weekend Reading 175! As usual, The Beat elite will be spending the weekend in Stately Beat Manor, paging through a big stack of books.

What will you be reading this weekend? The Beat is waiting to hear from you! Give us a shout-out in the comment section and let us know what you’re thinking.

Weekend Reading 175
Weekend Reading 175: Our Dreams at Dusk & Freaking Romance.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’ll be reading Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani with translation by Jocelyne Allen, adaptation by Ysabet MacFarlane, lettering and design by Kaitlyn Wiley, and cover design by KC Fabellon. Then, I’ll be re-reading Freaking Romance by Snailords. While I enjoyed this comic when it was on WEBTOON, I’m very excited to experience it on paper, which is always my personal reading preference.

Weekend Reading 175
Weekend Reading 175: Dragon Ball & Thorgal.

DEAN SIMONS: Nostalgia is in the air! I have been rereading Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball from the start on and off for a while (probably mentioned here). I am up to the King Piccolo arc as young Goku and the gang face all odds to save the world! Translation by Mari Morimoto and English adaptation by Gerard Jones. Meanwhile I am also revisiting what has been my favourite book in Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosiński’s gorgeous heroic fantasy Thorgal series: The Master of the Mountains (Le maître des montagnes). The French edition was published as Thorgal volume 15 in 1989 but I had the pleasure of reading the 2009 Cinebook translation – volume 7 in English – by Luke Spear. It has stuck in my mind as a fantastic standalone tale of weirdness and time loops – and still gives me a bit of a thrill looking at the cover. I plan to revisit it to see if it is still as good as I remember.

Weekend Reading 175
Weekend Reading 175: The Immortal Hulk.

TAIMUR DAR: Between Labor Day and recovering from some minor dental surgery, I’m definitely taking it easy this weekend and enjoying some reading. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Al Ewing’s acclaimed Immortal Hulk book when it was first released. It’s a title I always meant to read but I had so much going on at the time that kept me busy. So I’m rectifying that by reading the first trade paperback collection.

Weekend Reading 175
Weekend Reading 175: Different Seasons.

CY BELTRAN: I’m still jumping between the many reading projects I’ve saddled myself with, but in honor of this week’s debut of Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, I plan to jump back into the continuing adventures of Kamala Khan with Ms. Marvel: Army of One, from G. Willow Wilson, Takeshi Miyazawa, Nico Leon, Adrian Alphona, and Mirka Andolfo. I’m kicking myself that I missed the boat with these when they were ongoing, as these have been great comics so far. Also, free from what I’d like to call ‘The Cujo Curse,’ I’m making my way thru Stephen King’s Different Seasons, his first collection of novellas. There are four stories contained within, and since I read Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption on a flight this week, I’m checking out Apt Pupil throughout the long weekend. No clue what it’s about (Nazi student???) but I’m excited to be enjoying King’s writing again.
