After seven years, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards is set to return to Hollywood with The Creator. In a recent interview, Edwards reveals why he took a break from Hollywood after his smash hit for Lucasfilm.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story surprised fans and critics of Star Wars alike by bringing a truly fresh take to the Lucasfilm series. Yet unlike other directors who would plunge deeper into their work after such a success, Gareth Edwards took a step back from Hollywood, with his new film The Creator being his first project in seven years. Edwards revealed the reason for this was simply needing a break from the typical Hollywood grind set:
“I needed to get off the merry-go-round, do you know what I mean?” Edwards told SFX. “In Hollywood, you can get stuck on the hamster wheel, or whatever analogy you want to use. I just wanted to get off and have a break to take some time thinking about the next thing.”
“I got to make a very low-budget science fiction film with Monsters, and I realized there were some serious advantages to having no money. It was kind of a shock to have all the money you could ever want, and still be limited,” he continued. “I felt like if I could somehow get that big bag of cash and send it back in time to me when I was making Monsters, the possibilities would have been infinite.”
“And so, in a weird way, I was trying to find that kind of scenario again. I was as much interested in the process of how to make the film as I was the idea.”
Gareth Edwards is far from the only director to break out of the Hollywood bubble in recent years, with Michael Jai White recently opening up about wanting to tell fresh stories outside of Hollywood’s usual formula. The Creator seems to hold true to Edwards’ desire to recapture the spirit of indie filmmaking, though it’s unclear if the director’s latest endeavor will match the critical success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story during his time with Lucasfilm.
Rogue One’s story continues with Andor
The official Andor synopsis reads as follows: “The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make.
