Our Flag Means Death Season 2: Cast, Trailer, Release Date

A pirate’s life isn’t all that it’s cut out to be. On Sept. 14, HBO released the trailer for “Our Flag Means Death” season two, which finds our lovable band of chaotic pirates facing not just the perils of danger but also of love. When the Max series, starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi as pirates Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard), premiered in 2022, it roped fans in as a comedy stacked with famously funny actors — but it’s the budding romance between the two pirate leads that made them stay. In season two, Stede is trying to win back Ed, while Ed is intent on killing him.

The series was originally renewed back in June 2022. David Jenkins, the show’s creator, said in a statement at the time, “We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet.”

Jenkins told Polygon in March 2022 that he thought season two was likely. “I think [the chances for season two] look good,” he said. “I think we’re so lucky. It’s been so heartening to see how many people are responding to the show. . . . They understood what we were doing, and they were having the same conversations we had. So the fact that that’s happening, I think, is really a good sign, and bodes well for season 2.”

As Jenkins noted, the show enjoys a devoted fan base on social media, with many tweeting about their love for the show and creating fan art. But beyond the intensity with which fans have latched onto the show, Jenkins feels that he has a few seasons’ worth of story to tell. “I feel like we could probably do it in three [seasons],” he told Polygon. “The thing that fascinates me about this story and makes me want to write the show is asking who is Stede to Blackbeard, and who is Blackbeard to Stede. To me, that’s the through-line that cuts across the entire series. And I don’t know that you want to see that go on for five, six seasons.”

“Our Flag Means Death” stars Darby as Bonnet and Waititi as Blackbeard — and is based partially on their real friendship. The sprawling cast also includes Ewen Bremner, Con O’Neill, Samson Kayo, Nathan Foad, Vico Ortiz, Kristian Nairn, Matthew Maher, David Fane, Nat Faxon, Samba Schutte, and Leslie Jones. Season two also adds Minnie Driver to the cast as legendary pirate Anne Bonny.
