Alan Moore created some of the most iconic DC Comics of all time with Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke. Yet now it seems he wants nothing to do with the company, revealing he’s begun donating all royalties from his work to Black Lives Matter.

Alan Moore is a true titan of the comic industry, creating graphic novels like Watchmen that transcend the definitions of the medium while also creating hit stories for established characters like Batman: The Killing Joke. Despite this, Moore has had a contentious relationship with DC Comics, recently revealing their film adaptations have led him to donating his payments to Black Lives Matter:

“I no longer wish it to even be shared with them. I don’t really feel, with the recent films, that they have stood by what I assumed were their original principles,” Moore told The Telegraph. “So I asked for DC Comics to send all of the money from any future TV series or films to Black Lives Matter.”

Alan Moore’s dismay at the current state of DC Comics has been no secret. Moore is a known Anarchist, so it’s no wonder he isn’t exactly a fan of DC’s repeated attempts to turn Watchmen into yet another franchise instead of allowing the work to stand on its own. Given how the Batman: The Killing Joke film came out, it’s likely fans can’t blame him for tossing his checks to organizations that need it more like Black Lives Matter.

Who Watches The Watchmen?

Watchmen is an adaptation of the comic of the same name written by Alan Moore. Helmed by Damon Lindelof, the series explores the world of the Watchmen following the events of the graphic novel and what the world’s relationship should be to its greatest heroes.

Here is the official synopsis for Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen:

“Based on the celebrated graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, the exciting and dark Watchmen takes place in Tulsa, Okla., 34 years after the original story. After a white supremacist attack on the local police department, which leaves only two surviving cops on the beat, laws are passed that allow the cops to hide their identities behind masks. One of these cops, Angela Abar, adopts the identity of Sister Night and fights racists while dealing with the decades-long legacy of the vigilantes.”

Watchmen stars Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk. The series is produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television, based on Alan Moore’s graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons and published by DC.

Watchmen is available on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the show’s future, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content.
