¡Azúcar-rrrr! The Queen Of Salsa Celia Cruz has been honored with her own Barbie doll to celebrate this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month!

Cruz, who was born in Havana, Cuba and globally known as “The Queen of Salsa,” is one of the bestselling Latin musicians in history. Before passing away in July 2003, she’d done it all, music to movies, leaving her legendary mark in all parts of the industry, that was once male-dominated. Across her career, Cruz produced 75 albums and won several awards, like three Grammys; four Latin Grammys; a posthumous Grammy for Lifetime Achievement; and a National Medal of the Arts (presented by President Bill Clinton in 1994).

In 2021, Mattel, the producer behind Barbie, first announced that they would be releasing a limited-edition Celia Cruz Barbie in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and finally on Tuesday (September 12), the company debuted the new Queen of Salsa-inspired Barbie doll.

The Celia Cruz Barbie, officially titled ‘Celia Cruz Barbie® Inspiring Women™ Doll,’ is retailing for $35 and is currently sold out on the Mattel Creations website under Barbie Signature dolls. However, the doll is still retailing on Amazon and other select retailers.

In the description of listing it reads, “We’re proud to welcome ‘La Reina de la Salsa’ (The Queen of Salsa), Celia Cruz, to this series. Adored for her beautiful voice, Cruz’s award-winning career spanned over 60 years and includes 75 albums, 23 gold records, 5 Grammys, and the President’s National Medal of Arts. Our doll is as bright as a dancing flame in her fiery red mermaid dress, with silvery jewelry that adds sparkle to her signature look. ‘¡Azúcar!’”

It’s also noted that the designer of the doll is Carlyle Nuera and that with every purchase, the doll comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Similar to the real life Celia Cruz, who was adored by fans all over the world for her amazing voice and unique outfits, the Celia Cruz Barbie doll was created with a custom fiery red mermaid dress with flounces at the sleeves and hem. Her look comes complete with silver costume jewelry, golden heels, and a golden microphone, with matching golden hair and golden shimmery eyeshadow.

Born with a natural talent for singing, Celia toured the world with her band, honoring her heritage and bringing Afro-Cuban salsa music to all corners of the globe, in an award-winning career spanning over 60 years and 75 albums. With role models like Celia Cruz, girls can see that their voices make a difference. #HispanicHeritageMonth #YouCanBeAnything.”
