Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are divorcing after four years of marriage and seemingly still figuring out what that means for their family of four. Jonas filed for divorce on Sept. 5 in Miami-Dade County, FL, according to online records viewed by POPSUGAR. The couple then addressed their split in a joint statement on Instagram the next day, writing, “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
Jonas and Turner — who eloped in Las Vegas in May 2019 before their opulent wedding ceremony in France a month later — welcomed their first child, daughter Willa Jonas, in 2020, followed by their second, another baby girl in 2022. The former couple were a bit more public about the second pregnancy, showing off Turner’s baby bump at both the Oscars and the Met Gala. However, they’ve kept glimpses of her mostly under wraps since her summer 2022 arrival.
In the wake of Jonas’s divorce filing, Turner sued her soon-to-be ex-husband on Sept. 21 for the return of their two children to England, per court documents obtained by POPSUGAR. According to Turner’s petition filed in the southern district of New York, the two kids have been wrongfully retained in NYC since Sept. 20 from their England home, noting that it’s “a breach of the mother’s rights of custody under English law, England being the children’s habitual residence.”
The court documents state that the plan was for Jonas and Turner to move their children to England permanently in hopes of making it their “forever home.” However, in a statement shared with POPSUGAR on Sept. 21, a rep for Jonas said, “A Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children” at this time. Reps for Turner did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment about the actor’s lawsuit against Jonas.

Willa Jonas
Jonas and Turner’s first daughter, Willa, was born on July 22, 2020. While the former pair didn’t confirm that they were expecting, fans did get a few glimpses at Turner’s growing belly throughout her pregnancy. The two parents have been outspoken about their decision to keep Willa out of the spotlight, especially when it comes to social media — including their own — and press. In May 2021, Turner addressed her and Jonas’s privacy request after a paparazzi photograph of Willa had been sold and published.
“Yesterday some paparazzi managed to get a picture of my daughter and I, and I just want to say that the reason that I am not posting pictures of my daughter and making sure that we can avoid paparazzi at all costs is because I explicitly do not want those photos out there,” she said in a series of since-deleted Instagram Stories. “She did not ask for this life, to be photographed. It’s f*cking creepy that grown old men [are] taking pictures of a baby without their permission. I’m sickened, I’m disgusted, and I’m respectfully asking everyone to stop following us around and stop trying to take pictures of our daughter and especially printing them.”
Baby Jonas
According to People, Jonas and Turner welcomed their second child, another daughter, on July 14, 2022. Her name has yet to be announced, but a rep told the outlet at the time, “Joe and Sophie are happy to announce the arrival of their baby girl.” A day after their daughter’s birth was reported, Jonas shared a video montage on Instagram dedicated to Turner and captioned it, “Started from the bottom now we’re here…I want to see your ❤️ story.”
In a June 2022 interview with People, Jonas chatted about being a dad of two. “You really don’t know what to expect,” he said. “I think [I’m] maybe a little less nervous [this time], but I’m just excited. It’s such an amazing part of life.” Turner shared a similar sentiment in her June 2022 cover story for Elle UK. “We’re so excited to be expanding the family,” the “Game of Thrones” alum said. “It’s the best blessing ever.”
