Shakirahas opened up about once believing in “’til death do us part” before her shock split from footballer husband Gerard Piqué.
The Whenever, Wherever singer, 46, got candid about her love life in a recent interview with Billboard, revealing she believed her relationship would be in it for the long haul.
“My priority was my home, my family. I believed in ’til death do us part.’ I believed that dream, and I had that dream for myself, for my children,” she told the publication.

The singer explained she had believed in the forever kind of love after seeing the “example” her parents had set.
“My parents have been together, I don’t know, 50 years, and they love each other like the first day, with a love that’s unique and unrepeatable,” she shared.
“So I know it’s possible. And it has always been my example. It’s what I wanted for myself and my children, but it didn’t happen.”
Shakira and the former Barcelona footballer, 36, share sons Milan, nine, and Sasha, seven from their 12-year marriage.

Shakira’s career evolution: 1991 to 2023
The former couple announced their separation in June 2022 after first meeting back in 2010.
From there, the split got messy very quickly. Cheating speculations arose after Piqué went Instagram official with his new girlfriend Clara Chia Martí in January.
The singer then opened up to Billboard about why her career became a “third priority” while living overseas for Piqué’s football career.
“Well, the thing is, I was dedicated to him. To the family, to him. It was very difficult for me to attend to my professional career while in Barcelona,” she explained.
“I couldn’t leave my children and just go somewhere to make music outside my house. It was hard to maintain the rhythm,” she added.
Following the split, Shakira has seen relocated back to her home in Miami and is able to release music with much more ease and at a faster pace.
In the cover interview, the mother-of-two got candid about balancing her music and motherhood as a single-mum now.
The Wakka Wakka singer revealed it is “constant juggling” to be “present” with her children while still making an income.

The singer recently thanked her children for their support while accepting the coveted Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
“I want to thank people who have played a key role in my visual history… my label… I want to thank my parents and kids, thank you cheering me on making me feel mama can do it all,” she said in her acceptance speech.
Along with her sweet speech, Shakira performed a 10 minute performance of her greatest hits including the iconic tracks Hips Don’t Lie and Whenever, Wherever.
