Deadpool 3 has long been rumored to feature other iconic X-Men from their time under Fox’s umbrella alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. In a recent interview, director Shawn Levy confirmed they won’t ignore the history of Marvel characters at Fox.
For months rumors have swirled that Deadpool 3 will be the nexus of Fox’s X-Men films, with many key characters returning alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. It seems as though these rumors may be true, as Shawn Levy recently confirmed their acknowledgment of Fox’s legacy in the film:
“And Deadpool and Wolverine are iconic Marvel characters; more specifically, iconic Marvel-of-the-Fox-era characters,” Levy told Total Film Magazine. “We’re not going to pretend: ‘Oh, we snap our fingers, and suddenly that Fox legacy doesn’t exist, and it shaped a lot of what we now know as the MCU.’ Fox also shaped Ryan’s career, Hugh’s career and my career. So there’s a lot of history there, and there’s a lot of Marvel history at Fox. And certainly, that’s a part of our storytelling.”
This news certainly comes as a relief to fans who worried Deadpool 3 might lean too heavily into setting up the next era of X-Men for the MCU (and potentially Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine for Avengers: Secret Wars.) Luckily it seems as though Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds are dedicated to bringing fans a celebration of the Fox’s tenure with the Marvel brand, not a complete destruction.
