In a shocking display of racism and hatred, black tenants, Nubrittany Smith and her mother Tasha, residing in a Gresham apartment complex recently found themselves at the receiving end of death threats.
According to the Daily Mail, the ordeal began when their neighbor, Dominic Austin, started exhibiting increasingly hostile behavior towards them, as seen on the ring camera footage. Austin is accused of making racist slurs at the family and threatening to rape their daughters. Such a horrifying experience left them in constant fear for their safety, forcing them to constantly be on guard and even look outside their peep-holes.
“You have to make sure you look outside your peep-hole. You look at your Ring camera before you exit your home,” Smith said. “Honestly, it’s like you live inside of a jail or something. We were terrified, we were upset, we didn’t know what was going on. Instantly, we took the videos from the Ring camera, attached them to an email and sent them to the Landings at the Morrison.”

The incident involving the black tenants and their racist neighbor highlights the urgent need for stricter measures against hate crimes and discrimination. It is unacceptable that individuals continue to face such distressing situations solely based on their race. The Fair Housing Act, implemented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), clearly states that it is illegal to discriminate in the sale and rental of housing based on race or color. Unfortunately, incidents like this one serve as a reminder that there is still much work to be done in eradicating racism and ensuring equal treatment for all.
The impact of such racially motivated threats cannot be underestimated. The tenants involved in this incident expressed their overwhelming fear and terror over the situation they found themselves in. Imagine living in constant fear for your life simply because of the color of your skin. It is deeply unsettling to think that anyone would have to endure such torment within the confines of their own home, a place where they should feel safe and secure.

Instances like these also shed light on the importance of community support and solidarity. It is heartening to see that the tenants affected by this ordeal found solace in the support of their fellow neighbors and community members. By standing together against racism and hatred, they send a powerful message that such behavior will not be tolerated. Communities must come together to condemn acts of discrimination and work towards creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all residents.
