In Act 2, you can beat Thisobald Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3 without actually initiating the fight against the character. Thisobald is one of the three Thorm family members that run Reithwin Town following the installation of the curse of the area that made it become known as the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Thisobald Thorm is the owner and keeper of The Waning Moon distillery near Moonrise Towers in Baldur’s Gate 3. He is a bartender who is eager to hear impressive stories and have customers drink with them.
This article contains spoilers for Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Like the other two Thorms in Reithwin Town, Thisobald can be skipped altogether if you prefer to focus completely on the main story. Nevertheless, getting through Thisobald is vital if you are willing to complete the He Who Was quest in Baldur’s Gate 3. The good thing is that, like his other two family members in the area, Thisobald can be tricked into killing himself, thus avoiding a mini-boss battle. This can be a tough strategy to employ, but it is a very good one if you are looking forward to saving resources, as well as Short Rests and perhaps even a Long Rest.
Make Thisobald Thorm Kill Himself In Baldur’s Gate 3
Instead of initiating a fight inside The Waning Moon and aggroing not only Thisobald Thorm but also all of his undead patrons, you can abide by the villain’s requests and eventually make him kill himself. To do this, you will have to start the conversation with Thisobald in Baldur’s Gate 3 and participate in his drinking session.
Players can either drink his brew or choose to deceive him while drinking – the best choice is to feign drinking. This will require a Dexterity check each time, so using Astarion can help. If you choose to drink, you will need to pass a Constitution check to avoid getting drunk.
Be sure to quick-save before each roll in the interaction, in case the die does not roll as intended.
After each drink, either feigned or not, Thisobald will ask you to tell a story of your adventures. The rule of thumb here is that, the more magical and grandiose your story is, the higher you will need to roll in the subsequent Charisma check. As such, telling more believable stories of venturing through the Underdark or witnessing goblins is a better choice than talking about Mind Flayers or Avernus in Baldur’s Gate 3. Be sure to quick-save before these checks as well.
Between drinking and telling stories, you will be able to inquire more about Ketheric Thorm, his rule over the region, and other smaller details about the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
Once the two first drinking and storytelling sequences are done, Thisobald will request that you drink one more time. Passing the last Constitution or Dexterity check will result in Thisobald taking his last mug of brew, which causes his body to explode.
Making Thisobald kill himself this way does not aggro the patrons in The Waning Moon in Baldur’s Gate 3, making it the best option for players who want to avoid combat, save resources, and still purge the land from the Thorm’s influence.
