BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE Producers Talk About the Third Film’s Delays and Where They Are Now — GeekTyrant

Summary

Spider-Man 4 is confirmed and will be a part of the MCU’s future, debunking speculations that No Way Home marked the end of Holland’s Spider-Man. The initial Spider-Man trilogy being confirmed as the “Home trilogy” suggests that future movies may follow a different trend or have distinct titles without a clear continuing tradition. The story details for Spider-Man 4 aren’t yet clear, but it could be based around Peter trying to reconnect with MJ and Ned, exploring a more isolated friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, or the plot could otherwise focus on the Venom tease at the end of No Way Home.

The current Spider-Man 4 updates bode well for those excited about Tom Holland’s MCU hero future. Phase 4’s biggest movie was easily Spider-Man: No Way Home, finishing its theatrical run as the third highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movie worldwide. This led to talk about the future and the possibility of another MCU Spider-Man movie. Some thought No Way Home marked the end for Holland’s Spider-Man, but the end offered some promise for future storylines. No Way Home was an incredible spectacle, bursting with entertainment and offering the joyous fan service that only top-level comic book movies usually manage.

In the post-Avengers: Endgame world, the expectations placed on Marvel movies increased exponentially, and No Way Home’s massive scope was a testament to the need to try and outdo the Infinity Saga. That it has achieved such success is astonishing, but now attention turns to what Sony and Marvel can do next with this character in the MCU timeline. Here’s everything known about Spider-Man 4 and how No Way Home possibly sets up Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man movie future.

The Latest Spider-Man 4 News

Spider-Man and MJ together in No Way Home.

The most recent Tom Holland Spider-Man 4 updates came from MCU head Kevin Feige. When talking about the next phase of movies, Feige mentioned the ones he is most excited about, including The Marvels and Captain America: New World Order. He then was asked about Spider-Man 4 and said that “we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.” He also mentioned the upcoming Daredevil show on Disney+ with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their Netflix roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. That is important as the two heroes might be connected.

The MCU has also revealed more about what the title of Spider-Man 4 might look like, by confirming the name of the MCU Spider-Man trilogy is the “Home” trilogy. With this in mind, it’s clear that future movies will follow a different trend, be that another trilogy with its own distinctive title hook, or by having future movies starring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man go by different names without any clear continuing tradition.

Spider-Man 4 Is Confirmed

Spider-Man unmasked in No Way Home.

The Tom Holland Spider-Man 4 updates came courtesy of Sony’s Amy Pascal, who talked more Spider-Man content in an interview: “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go on to the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.” Also, before Feige confirmed it, Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman confirmed that there is still at least one MCU crossover on the docket:

We lend one, then they lend one, and that’s how Benedict is in this movie, so we have one more lend back that is committed.

Spider-Man 4 (Predicted) Release Date

Tom Holland Venom Spider-Man

Assuming Spider-Man 4 follows the usual trend of releasing Spider-Man movies to capitalize on the brand power of the character, a release date of the end of 2024 would fit. This might be hard to pull off, even with Sony onboard, as Marvel has a full slate of movies coming. Phase 5 is set through September 2024, with six movies and up to seven TV shows, leaving little room for Spider-Man 4 in the phase. However, the last Disney+ series is expected to be Daredevil: Born Again, and The Cosmic Circus reports Spider-Man 4 will come off the heels of that MCU series.

Spider-Man 4 Cast

The Spider-Man No Way Home Ending sees Peter, Ned and MJ say goodbye

There are no Tom Holland Spider-Man 4 updates concerning the movie’s cast. Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Peter Parker completely alone as Doctor Strange’s spell wiped memories of Peter out of existence when it came to his friends MJ and Ned. When Spider-Man 4 arrives, Tom Holland will almost certainly be back for the new movie. Sony head honcho Tom Rothman did say (via Deadline) that Sony “hopes to get working on the next Spider-Man movie” with “that whole group” from the existing trilogy. This means Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon would all return.

Spider-Man 4 Story Details

Spider-Man in the black symbiote suit

Spider-Man 4 has few updates concerning the story of the movie itself, arguably because this may still be under construction. However, the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home left hints. If the trio of stars from the first three movies reunite, something has to undo Doctor Strange’s spell, or otherwise concretely prove to MJ and Ned that they have erased memories – which could viably happen as a result of the multiversal shenanigans teased for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. That said, it’s more than likely that a follow-up movie would focus on a more isolated friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, possibly allowing for an installment that’s more squarely focused on Holland’s Peter Parker and his evolution as a superhero.

There was also a post-credit stinger with Venom’s symbiote making its way into the MCU. While Tom Hardy went back to his world, that piece of the symbiote could find its way to Spider-Man, and the MCU could have a chance to redo the story Sam Raimi attempted in Spider-Man 3. This would allow Spider-Man 4 a lot of different story avenues, and a lot of chances to adapt parts of the comics, which may well mean it’s the most likely avenue going forward. However, until specific details are confirmed, the story for the impending fourth Spider-Man movie will remain a subject of debate.
