Merriam-Webster has officially added new slang words to the dictionary. It’s reported that 690 new words have recently been added to the dictionary, and they include slang like “simp,” “thirst trap,” “mid,” “GOATED,” and “bussin.”

Of the aforementioned slang words, their definitions are listed as: “simp” (to show excessive devotion to or longing for someone or something); “thirst trap” (a photograph (like a selfie) or video shared for the purpose of attracting attention or desire, or someone or something that attracts attention or strong desire); “mid” (an informal adjective for neither very good nor very bad, so-so, or meh); “GOATED” (which can also be spelled lowercase, is a slang adjective for something considered to be the greatest of all time); and “bussin’” (a slang adjective that means extremely good or excellent. Especially bussin’ means delicious or tasty).

Some of the other new additions also include AI jargon, like “doggo,” which is a noun and slang for dog. “UAP,” a noun or abbreviation for “unidentified aerial phenomenon” has been added, as well as “generative AI,” a noun that means “artificial intelligence that is capable of generating new content.”

There have also been new words added for things going on within the climate and environment. So, new words like “forever chemical,” a noun that means a “toxic substance” that lasts for years in the environment, have been added. Along with the world “rewild,” which is a verb that means “to increase biodiversity and restore the natural processes of an ecosystem.”

It is a noun that refers to “a character in a video game that does not represent and cannot be manipulated by a player.”

Other words have been added like: “girlboss” (an ambitious and successful woman, especially a businesswoman or entrepreneur); “ngl” (an abbreviation often found in text messages. It stands for not gonna lie, or not going to lie); and “tfw (an abbreviation of that face when — used especially on social media or in text messages to introduce a relatable scenario or an image that evokes a specific feeling).
