No Way Home’ Concept Art Reveals Alternate Hero Saving MJ

One of the most cathartic moments in Spider-Man: No Way Home was seeing Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man finally get to save a falling damsel by way of Zendaya’s MJ. However, new concept art reveals that wasn’t always the case.

This fact was revealed by Phil Saunders, one of the concept artists for Spider-Man: No Way Home, who has recently been sharing plenty of juicy behind-the-scenes details about the film. According to Saunders, while he did enjoy Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man saving MJ in the end, it took some time to find out exactly how Zendaya’s character would be saved.

“Redemptive moments like MJ’s rescue by [Andrew Garfield’s] [Spider-Man] in [Spider-Man: No Way Home] seem inevitable in retrospect,” Saunders explained, “But in practice, it takes some searching to get there. In an earlier version of the script, [MJ] was dropped to her death, only to be rescued by Dr. Strange’s Cloak of Levitation.”

“This led to a liberating moment of freedom for MJ as she gets to experience flying for herself, but ultimately we would have missed out on one of the most cathartic beats of the entire Spider-Man series. It was still fun though, to try to capture that feeling of weightlessness in MJ’s pose.”

Seeing MJ take flight in Spider-Man: No Way Home certainly would’ve been a fun moment for fans of the character. Zendaya’s take on the character, while certainly beloved, is often criticized for lacking the brazen energy of prior incarnations. Though regardless of what people think about her character’s arc, all fans can agree that Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man definitely deserved to finally save the day in the end.

What does the future hold for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker? The success of Spider-Man: No Way Home has opened up a world of possibilities for the fan-favorite Marvel character. The movie ends with Peter erasing himself from the memories of his loved ones in order to protect them from his enemies. This sets up an interesting dynamic for future Spider-Man movies, as Peter will have to navigate a world in which he is not known as Spider-Man.

Rumor has it that Tom Holland has signed on for multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances after Spider-Man: No Way Home. The future of the Spider-Man series is currently unclear, but it is likely that Marvel will continue to explore the multiverse concept that was introduced in No Way Home.
