WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Castlevania: Nocturne.
Summary
Richter Belmont’s powers and skills in Castlevania: Nocturne are quite impressive, especially after he overcomes his fears and embraces his destiny, similar to how it plays out for Castlevania’s Trevor Belmont. Netflix continues its adaptation of the Castlevania games with Castlevania: Nocturne, a sequel to the four-season series set around 300 years after Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard managed to stop the Rebis. Nocturne, just like the Castlevania games, follows an entirely different set of characters from the previous installment. However, Richter Belmont continues his family’s tradition when it comes to magic and the use of the Belmont whip.
Castlevania: Nocturne keeps the same power system as Castlevania, even though some things have changed in 300 years. For example, Richter Belmont had never seen a Night Creature before the events of Castlevania: Nocturne. However, as soon as the Castlevania: Nocturne timeline began to advance, Richter had to use all of his skills, including magic, to protect himself and his friends.
Richter Belmont Is Arguably The Strongest Belmont
In the Castlevania game lore, there were five main Belmont characters in chronological order before Richter’s story happened. In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the sequel to Richter’s game debut Rondo of Blood, there is an indication of who the strongest Belmont is. Richter is described as the strongest Belmont in Symphony of the Night, which is one of the games Castlevania: Nocturne is based on. Alucard specifically says that no other vampire hunter can defeat Richter and that his powers are unmatched and supreme. Considering that there is arguably no better vampire hunter than a Belmont, it’s safe to say Richter was the strongest of his lineage as of the 18th century.
Richter is even considered one of the most powerful and skillful Belmont in general, including those who came after him in the Belmont lineage. While it can be assumed that the Belmont clan gets stronger by generation, Richter will always be close to the top in the list of the most powerful Castlevania characters. Of course, the Castlevania games’ power system does not necessarily apply to Netflix’s Castlevania shows. That said, considering how both Castlevania and Nocture have remained faithful to the overall lore of the games, it can be assumed that much of those comparisons apply to the shows as well.
Why Richter Belmont Is So Much Stronger Than Castlevania’s Trevor
It does not take long for Castlevania: Nocturne to establish that Richter Belmont is far more powerful than his ancestor Trevor Belmont, whose story audiences followed in the original Castlevania show. Trevor could not use magic in Castlevania, and he even said he could not comprehend it. Richter, on the other hand, was born of a family of magic users that trace back to Sypha, who married into the Belmont clan in Castlevania. Every Belmont born after Trevor and Sypha got together was trained in mystical arts, leading to multiple generations of vampire hunters that could use magic.
It must be noted that, after the death of his mother at the hands of a vampire, Richter Belmont was traumatized and could not use magic. Richter eventually fights the demons of his past, both literally and figuratively, and is able to use magic again. Not using magic does not make Trevor any less impressive, quite the contrary. Still, Richter combines regular fighting skills with supernatural powers in Castlevania: Nocturne.
