Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel featured a climactic battle between Superman and his arch-enemy General Zod. However, according to storyboard artist Jay Olivia, fans misunderstand a key detail about the climax.
One of the biggest complaints levied against Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel at the time of release is that it felt as though Superman didn’t care about the people of Metropolis, nearly leveling the city in an attempt to stop General Zod. Many specifically point to a scene where, instead of catching a truck thrown at him, Superman simply moves to the side to let it hit a parking garage that was likely filled with civilians.
According to Jay Olivia, who served as a storyboard artist for Man of Steel, civilian casualities were never Zack Snyder’s intention of the scene. In a recent post on social media, Olivia clarified that, even if Superman did endanger civilians in his fight with General Zod, other heroes likely saved the day:
Many people would certainly call it a stretch that nearly every destroyed building in Metropolis would be abandoned, or that Superman would even know that. However, this explanation certainly puts the minds of fans of Man of Steel at ease. In fact, it may give fans of Zack Snyder a reason to say he did Justice League first!
Superman’s DC Universe Future
Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. The movie promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark Kent and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
