Before landing the role of Aquaman under Zack Snyder’s direction, Jason Momoa was a very popular fan favorite choice to portray Lobo. There were rumors for a while that under the previous Warner Bros. and DC Films regime, there was a live-action Lobo film with Michael Bay in the works.

Momoa has been rumored by the Hollywood Reporter to be playing anti-hero Lobo in the new iteration of the DCU for director James Gunn.

Many fans still think that Aquaman star Jason Momoa would make a perfect Lobo. A piece of concept art from digital artist clements.ink backs that claim up. You can see Jason Momoa as Lobo in the artwork below.

Will Jason Momoa Become Lobo in the DCU?

Momoa dropped by the Warner Bros earlier this year and apparently got “some great news” at his meeting at DC.

Momoa was hyped up after the meeting and shared it on his Instagram story.

“Four years ago, I had the jeep out front… Y’all remember four years ago? I was screaming, wasn’t I? … Screaming when I left Warner Bros. Everybody ready? YAHOO! Four years again. It’s a mystery, baby… I’ve got some really good news. Great news with Warner Bros. Amazing,” Momoa said.

Momoa added: “Wish I could tell you, but here it is. Peter [Safran], I love you. James [Gunn], I love you. David [Zaslav]. Okay. To the future, to the future.”

The Future of the DC Universe Under James Gunn

Two weeks after Momoa’s meeting, DC held a presentation for jounrlaists at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, where James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed ten film and television projects that are currently in development at DC Studios. The two only mentioned the release dates of the next Superman movie and Robert Pattinson’s Batman sequel, the latter of which is set outside of the DC Universe and not part of the main slate, but a list of the projects can be found below.

The titles are subject to change ahead of their start date.

CREATURE COMMANDOS (animated series)WALLER (live-action series)SUPERMAN: LEGACY (live-action film)LANTERNS (live-action series)THE AUTHORITY (live-action film)PARADISE LOST (live-action series)THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD (live-action film)BOOSTER GOLD (live-action series)SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW (live-action film)SWAMP THING (live-action film)

The first chapter of the DC Universe is called “Gods and Monsters,” according to the two DC Studios heads.

“DC Studios is unprecedented,” Peter Safran said during the presentation, which lasted about 55 minutes. “It is a standalone, production entity and studio. It is the first time ever that everything DC related film, television, live action, animation and gaming is all centralized under one creative vision, that of James and myself.”

Safran added: added the following: “That’s never happened before and that is what really got us excited and made us want to take the job. Zaslav had had a vision in mind of a standalone studio that would have everything DC centralized. And that was really what was the appeal for us was, the idea of coming in and to be able to have access to any character, any story and to tell the stories that we wanted to tell across all the mediums, whatever was better for a specific property, we were going to be medium agnostic so wanted eight out of eight hours to tell it as a series, great when it fell into two hour movie, also great. So that’s where we are. That’s how we ended up here today.”

Momoa will next be seen as Arthur Curry in the 2nd and perhaps final installment of the Aquaman franchise titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which will be released on Dec. 20, 2023. The film is set to close the curtain on the previous DCEU.
