Audiences may know State Farm’s khaki-wearing representative as “Jake from State Farm,” but in real life, his name is Kevin Miles.
Miles, whose birth name is Kevin Mimm, began starring in the insurance company’s commercials in 2020, replacing Jake Stone who played the character in the now-infamous ad from 2011.
The 2011 commercial featured a husband calling the insurance company at 3 a.m. and his wife catching him on the phone. She assumes she’s overheard him talking to another woman and takes the phone asking “Jake from State Farm” what he’s wearing to which he replies with the iconic line, “Uhhh … khakis?”
Nine years later, State Farm introduced Mills as the new Jake, and he’s starred in multiple ads for them since as his character has taken off. He also became an influencer, growing his social media following on everything from Instagram to TikTok.
So who is “Jake from State Farm”? Here’s everything to know about Kevin Miles and his role as State Farm’s latest spokesperson.
Miles got his big break as Jake in 2020
State Farm announced they were planning on reviving their character, Jake, in 2020 and they cast Miles, who went by Mimms then, in the role.
“The simple phrase, ‘Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm is There,’ reflects how State Farm agents and employees make a meaningful difference helping others,” Rand Harbert, Chief Agency Sales and Marketing Officer, said in the press release. “Jake from State Farm isn’t just an individual – he is all of us. He represents what every one of the 19,000 State Farm agents and 58,000 employees strive to deliver.”
Miles got the role after auditioning in Los Angeles and found himself in a room of 40 actors for the callback, many of whom he recognized from previous work.
“I was definitely really nervous going in just because you see these actors that you admire and have seen before going in for this role and you’re just like ‘Oh crap, I know they’re great,’ ” Miles said on the Dan Patrick Show in 2021. “I think I just happened to test well in the focus groups and I just wanted to make something that felt close to me and close to who I am.”
The original Jake is now a bartender
The original Jake from State Farm’s name is Jake Stone, and he was sourced from an internal casting call. He was originally an employee at State Farm and after his role in the commercial, eventually left the job and currently works as a bartender at Pub II, a bar in Normal, Illinois.
Stone spoke with The Pantagraph in February 2023 and gave an update on how he was doing 12 years after his viral moment. He shared that he has two young children and a wife — and is still wearing khakis!
“I’d never stop wearing khakis,” he said, sharing that the khakis he wore in the spot are actually hanging from Pub II. “We’ll stop the rumors right there!”
Miles had aspirations of becoming an actor
Before he was cast as Jake, Miles was an aspiring actor who starred in a few minor roles, including an appearance in an episode of Criminal Minds and S.W.A.T. However, his work as Jake has opened up many more doors for him, he said.
When Patrick asked if Miles was worried about getting other roles in the future as he’s become known as Jake, Miles admitted he wasn’t concerned.
“I personally don’t have any concerns, I know there’s other people, they say you’ll get stuck,” he said. “But I think it’s a new day and age in entertainment, there’s a lot of social media stars that are able to break out from doing skits online because people are familiar with them.”
He continued, “I come from a theater background anyway so doing Jake is so close to me, I’m not trying to do a caricature or anything … so I think from there I can put that into other roles as well as when I grow as an actor and I really try to mold myself and get better. On film, I think I’ll be able to branch out and do the works that I love or want to pursue. It’s more of a stepping stone.”
He starred in a commercial with Drake and Paul Rudd for the Super Bowl
One of Mile’s prime starring moments came when he got the chance to appear in a Super Bowl commercial with Drake and Paul Rudd. In the ad, Jake sits with NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes as the two joke their stand-ins don’t look anything like them (with Rudd acting as Mahomes’ stand-in).
Jake then says he doesn’t get a stand-in when Drake appears and introduces himself as “Drake from State Farm.” As Jake tries to deliver his signature line, Drake attempts to chime in.
“Hey stand-ins don’t have lines,” Jake admonishes Drake.
He has gotten close with famous NFL players
After the Super Bowl ad, Jake developed a friendship with Rodgers and Mahomes and has worked with them again since, most recently with the latter and his Kansas City Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce. Jake posted videos of the three on his Instagram, referring to them as his “squad.”
On the Dan Patrick Show, Jake said he sees Rodgers as his “Uncle Aaron” and Mahomes as his “brother,” and said he “couldn’t say” who he’d be rooting for in the Super Bowl if they were to play each other.
“I’d hate to see any of them not win a championship, they’re both champions,” he said. “Even listening them to talk to each other on set, you can just know their dedication to the game is so great that I want them to win. They are the MVPs.”
Miles took in a Kansas City Chiefs game with Donna Kelce
In October 2023, Jake from State Farm joined the Kelce brothers’ mom, Donna Kelce, in the stands to root for her son Jason during a Philadelphia Eagles game.
“I also have a superstar in my corner. @JakeStateFarm,” the Eagles center wrote on X, referring to Taylor Swift’s latest presence at Travis’ games.
Miles also posted a selfie of himself with Donna on X. “In my red era with Mama MaAuto,” he wrote, referring to Swift’s album Red (Taylor’s Version).
According to a press release, Jake got to share the Kelce family suite thanks to none other than Ryan Reynolds and his marketing firm, Maximum Effort, who arranged the seating to create another viral moment.
Miles is passionate about working out
During his Dan Patrick Show interview, Patrick first asked Miles if he was taking performance-enhancing drugs since his muscles were looking bigger than ever. Miles laughed and denied the claim, simply attributing his physique to his strict workout regimen.
Miles added that he tries to get in shape based on the role he will be playing as Jake, and who he would be surrounded by.
“I gained some weight for the NFL spot because I wanted to make it look as if I play a pick-up game with these guys, and we really do some damage,” he explained. “And then for the NBA stuff, I want to be a little smaller, just leaner. I’m trying to be the Christian Bale of these commercials right now.”
