Ahead of the release of Jada Pinkett Smith’s new memoir, “Worthy,” the actress is speaking exclusively with PEOPLE to reveal some shocking details about her marriage with Will Smith.
While speaking to the outlet, Jada shares that the new book gives an even deeper dive into their relationship which appeared to be strong on the outside but super rocky on the inside. While sharing that, she made the shocking revelation about their relationship status. The 52-year-old revealed that she and Will, 55, have been separated since 2016 – and were in fact living separately when her husband slapped the hell out of Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022 over his joke about her alopecia.
Jada went on to admit, “We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.” Speaking more about the infamous Oscars slap, Jada went on to admit that she really thought it was a skit when it all happened but realized Will was serious when he came back to his seat and uttered the words, “Are you ok?”
“I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him,’” Jada, recalls. “It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”
Despite what unfolded, Jada wrote her in her new book that “I’m going to be by his side. But also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”

More On Jada Pinkett Smith And Her Kids
Jada, who shares Jaden, 25, Willow, 22, with Will and Trey, 30, from Will’s previous marriage with ex-spouse Sheree Zampino, says “My children, they’re little gurus. They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance.”
She continued, “They love every part of me. The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad. And it’s one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there’s, to be the recipient of that.”
Jada even credits her son Jaden for saving her life after he introduced her to ayahuasca. He told her to participate in a ceremony, which his friend’s dad once did and apparently helped cure his depression. Per the outlet, a leader of the ceremony supplies a plant-based psychedelic drug, which is usually brewed into a tea to drink, and guides the subject through hallucinations.
“I’ve learned how to tune into each one of them and understand their superpowers. And so when Jaden came to me that day and he’s like, ‘Mom, you got to to hear this. My friend’s dad, he had this experience. I need you to come in here and listen.’ I’m like, ‘I’m there. What is it?’ And it opened up a whole new world of healing that I’m so grateful for,” she told the outlet.
She went on to say, “Ayahuasca helped me, it gave me a new intimate relationship with myself that I had never had before.” Jada says since the first time she took the drug, “the suicidal thoughts completely went away.”
Jada is set to talk more about her about her life and relationship in an upcoming interview on the Today Show with Hoda Kotob, which is scheduled for Thursday.
