More than a year and a half after the infamous “Slapgate” incident, Jada Pinkett Smith is alleging that Chris Rock had previously asked her on a date amid rumors that she and Will Smith were getting divorced.

Jada Says Set The Record Straight Before Chris Rock Apologized
The Girls Trip actress made her revelation during a recent sit-down with PEOPLE. She recalled that, despite divorce reports about her and Will emerging on a near-annual basis, Chris allegedly believed them at one point. In turn, he apparently called her up and asked her on a date.
“I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce. And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’”
However, Jada Pinkett Smith says she shut down the rumors before Chris Rock “profusely apologized.”
“I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.”
Moving along, the actress shared that she and Chris haven’t spoken since the night of the 2022 Academy Awards. When asked if she had “any desire to talk” to Chris, Jada proclaimed, “Here’s my desire: I just hope that all the misunderstanding around this can be cleared up and that there can be peace.”
At this time, Chris Rock hasn’t publicly acknowledged Jada Pinkett Smith’s statement.
Jada Pinkett Smith Recently Revealed She & Will Smith Have Been Separated Since 2016
This commentary coincides with Jada revealing that she and Will Smith have been “separated” since 2016.
As The Shade Room reported, Jada told TODAY correspondent Hoda Kotb that she and Will were just “exhausted” by 2016.
She added that the couple never shared their separation due to them “just not being ready.” Jada also said she “considered” divorce, though she hasn’t “been able to break that promise” they made when they wed.
“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever, and I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
