Sergio Brown was taken into custody in San Diego after returning to the United States from Mexico three weeks after relatives claimed he went missing. He is awaiting extradition to Maywood, Illinois, to face charges of first-degree murder, as PEOPLE reported. Days after his mother’s death, Brown uploaded disturbing videos to an Instagram page under the user name “intplayerwithapassport.” However, the page is no longer active.
In the videos, Brown continues to say “fake news” and claims the FBI paid him a visit on the day of Bob Marley’s death. After pausing for a few seconds, Brown continued to say that the Maywood Police Department kidnapped him twice. He says he thought his mother was on vacation, and “it had to be the FBI or Maywood PD.” PEOPLE also reported that the account had been active since 2021 but didn’t follow Brown or his brother.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating Myrtle’s death as a homicide, and she died from multiple injuries resulting from an assault. Sergio’s brother also released a statement about her death. He said his mother was a “strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny” woman who saved his art. Her sister, Sheila Simmons, also released a statement about her sister’s death and saddened about Sergio’s arrest.
“Our family is thankful that the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office answered our call for urgent and immediate action in the case of our beloved Myrtle Jean Simmons-Brown. We are also heartened by the news that Sergio Brown has been apprehended and returned to the United States unharmed. Our family is prayerful that, as the investigation progresses, more answers will become available, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.”
Sergio Brown played in the NFL for six seasons after signing with the New England Patriots in 2010. He retired in 2016 after playing with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills. Brown reportedly suffered from a concussion and went on to live with his mother at their home in Maywood. It is unclear what he did with his post-NFL life and career.
