A couple of years ago it was announced that Danny McBride and David Gordon Green were developing an animated series for HBO based on the classic ‘80s The Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. There’s been no update on the project since it was announced, but according to Green, the project is still being worked on.

McBride, Green, and Josh Bycel (Solar Opposites) will write the series, and it was inspired by their love of Garbage Pail Kids and Saturday morning cartoons. At the time it was said the animated series would be “family-friendly and appeal to audiences of all ages.”

While the series was referred to as being “family-friendly,” in Green’s recent update, he described it as being “naughty.” Here’s what he said in an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast:

“Right now, McBride and I are trying to do an animated series on the Garbage Pail Kids, if you ever had those cards. So we’re working on that and we’ve got some pretty cool ways we can make a naughty animated show, we’ll see if they’ll have us on that one.”

Green didn’t really offer any additional insight on the series, but I’m curious to see how it turns out. I hope it ends up being a ridiculous bonkers show!

I used to collect Garbage Pail Kids cards when I was a kid. I loved collecting those cards, and they brought some silly joy and entertainment into my life when I was a little kid.

The Garbage Pail Kids were a humorous parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, each card featured a character with a comically grotesque appearance and a humorous, often pun-filled name. These characters were typically involved in bizarre or distasteful situations. The cards quickly gained popularity among children for their irreverent humor and shock value, much to the distress of many parents and educators.
