Summary

Smallville characters receive a medieval makeover in striking fan art, as portraits of key characters like Clark Kent and Lex Luthor are transformed into medieval versions of themselves. Despite never getting a live-action season 11, there might be hope for Smallville fans with a planned animated series revival, featuring most of the original cast and set to pick up right after the series’ ending. While Tom Welling’s Clark Kent may never suit up as Superman in a live-action Smallville revival project, fans could still see him play the superhero in the planned animated series revival.

Smallville characters receive a medieval makeover in striking fan art. Before DC started entering the shared universe business with the Arrowverse, the DCEU, and the upcoming DC Universe, Tom Welling led Smallville’s star-studded cast for ten seasons as Clark Kent. Many of DC Comics’ most popular characters played a role in the series, and some of them appear alongside Welling’s Kal-El in an unexpected setting thanks to new fan art.

On Instagram, @buffy2ville shared portraits of some key Smallville characters with a twist — the DC series goes medieval.

Welling’s Clark Kent, Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor, Erica Durance’s Lois Lane, and more appear as medieval versions of themselves. Clark looks like Robin Hood, making a fun connection to Justin Hartley’s Oliver Queen from Smallville.

Will We Ever Actually Get More Smallville Content?

Smallville Superman Tom Welling

Smallville season 11 never made it to live-action — despite being the title of a comic series that continued the adventures of Welling’s Clark Kent. The only live-action Smallville content that came after the end of the Superman prequel series was Welling and Durance’s return as older versions of their Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

As Crisis on Infinite Earths revealed that Welling’s Clark Kent gave up his powers to lead a normal life with Lois and their daughters, it is hard to imagine that the actor will one day suit up as Superman in a Smallville revival project. However, while that might never happen in live-action, there is one way for DC fans to get more Smallville content and finally see Welling play Superman and not only Clark.

Last year, Welling gave a promising update on the Smallville animated series revival. Welling is working alongside Rosenbaum to bring back the show, with their planned animated Smallville revival set to pick up right after the series’ ending. Welling revealed that their plan is to have most of the Smallville cast back as their characters, with original Smallville showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar returning to create the story of the animated revival. With the end of the Writers Guild of America strike, it is possible that more information on the status of the Smallville animated series will be released before the end of the year.
