Missy Elliott is giving back to her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, in a major way. According to The Virginian-Pilot, Elliott visited the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority for a special ceremony on Tuesday.

We should note the rapper’s visit to her hometown arrived on the state’s first annual “Missy Elliott Day.”

More Details Regarding Missy Elliott’s Recent Visit To Portsmouth, Virginia

According to the outlet, Missy Elliott arrived in her hometown to celebrate her dedicated day. However, instead of solely basking in the achievement, Elliott left a generous gift for Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority residents.

During a ceremony at the Dr. O. Marriner Family Life Center, the 52-year-old presented a $50,000 check to residents. According to the housing authority’s Executive Director, Alisa Winston, the rapper’s check will “pay the past-due rents of 26 families.”

“Instead of it being a celebration of Missy Elliott, you know about me, I wanted to give back and let that be the celebration of Missy Elliott, just to show that I love everybody out here,” the 52-year-old explained to attendees, per The Virginian-Pilot.

Before concluding her speech, Elliott explained that her hometown is with her “no matter where” she goes. Additionally, she reiterated that she loves her city and loves her state.

“Just know that P-town is with me no matter where I go,” Elliot reportedly told the crowd. “I love my city. I love my state… Everything about Missy comes from here – the hospitality, the humility, the confidence – if you mess with me, it’s a problem. We sweet, but don’t try us.”

Elliott also attended the ceremony alongside her mother, Patricia, who shared words regarding her daughter’s thoughtful donation.

“So when you give, you give because you remember those days when you didn’t have,” Patricia Elliott explained after the ceremony concluded, per The Virginian-Pilot. “If each person would give when they get to the top, then, what a real beautiful world we would be in.”

The 52-Year-Old Rapper Shared Photos & Reflected On The Ceremony Via Social Media

The rapper took to X, formerly known as Twitter, Tuesday evening to share photos from the event and additional thoughts.

“Thank you VA! Where I was born taught me DRIVE taught me FAITH taught me HUMILITY also taught me Dont try me either… but most of all taught me the blessings I get are not just for me but to Bless someone else… I love #757 #MissyElliottDay“

More Details Regarding Missy Elliot’s Annual Holiday & Commemorations In Virginia

As The Shade Room previously reported, Missy Elliot celebrated having a boulevard named after her in Portsmouth last September.

“#757 VA…my Grandma who passed when I was young always told me to stay PRAYED UP & DREAM BIG! A Blvd… I’m crying Tears of Joy… I have been BLESSED so much but this right here hits my heart differently… I am so HUMBLY GRATEFUL to be from P-TOWN 2up2down… The ENTIRE VA…”

Additionally, on October 17, 2022, the rapper was commemorated with a day in her honor recognized by the state of Virginia. According to The Virginian-Pilot, the rapper was honored with the achievement while attending a celebration at her alma mater, Manor High School.

The outlet reports that the event was ultimately attended by “fans, state and local politicians.” Ultimately, Governor Glenn Youngkin proclaimed the date “Missy Elliott Day” in the “commonwealth of Virginia.”
