The Economist compiled a chart of the runtimes of movies going back to the 1930s. Perhaps not surprisingly, the trend is toward longer movies overall but especially so with more popular films.

Original article for those with access

For those without access (or TLDR), here are some highlights:

The average length of productions has crept up by around 24%, from one hour and 21 minutes in the 1930s to one hour and 47 minutes in 2022 Studios want to squeeze the most out of their costly intellectual property Long movies can mean forgoing two showings per night, which hurts ticket sales and profits Another explanation for longer films has to do with directors’ growing clout

In the chart, the black line is for all movies whereas the red line is for "popular" movies as defined by the number of IMDB ratings.

The original article allowed for hovering over each red dot to see the title. That one red dot just over the four-hour mark in the upper right is for Zack Snyder's Justice League.
