The film comes from YouTube content creator Weird Satanist Guy, aka Andrew Bowser, and he both stars in and directs the movie.
Bowser takes on the role of Amateur occultist Marcus J. Trillbury, aka Onyx the Fortuitous, and he’s struggling. “He’s misunderstood at home and work, but his dreams for a new life seem to be answered when he lands a coveted invitation to the mansion of his idol Bartok the Great for a ritual to raise the spirit of an ancient demon. He excitedly joins Bartok and his fellow eclectic group of devotees as they prepare for the ceremony, but pretty quickly it becomes apparent everything is not as it seems. As Onyx and his new friends fight to keep their souls, he must decide what he’s willing to truly sacrifice in order to meet his destiny.”
In my review for the film, I said: “The movie is exactly what you’d expect from the guy, and it’s filled with Bowser’s signature comedy style. It’s just delightfully goofy, supernatural fun! With all of the dark and depressing movies that I watch at Sundance, this is the kind of movie that just let me breathe a little bit and once again discover the joy of watching movies.”
Onyx the Fortuitous previously had this to say about the movie: “I can’t wait to partner with Cineverse and Fathom to bring my movie to the big screen! It will go down in history as the GREATEST HORROR TEAM UP OF ALL TIME. Unless you count Freddy vs. Jason WHICH I DON’T.”
Bowser added: “Onyx started out as a quirky digital character that I hoped would find some sort of audience, even a tiny one. To see the growth in popularity over the last few years has been incredible, and now we’re preparing for a major theatrical event. It just shows that if you’re willing to put your art or yourself out there amazing things can happen.”
The film also stars Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ralph Ineson, Rivkah Reyes, TC Carson, Arden Myrin and Melanie Chandra.
Cineverse and Fathom Events will release Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls in movie theaters nationwide on Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time. For a complete list of theater locations, visit the Fathom Events website.
