John Stamos opens up about losing his dear friend Bob Saget in his new memoir If You Would Have Told Me. Just a few weeks after having dinner with Bob, John writes that he got a call from his publicist asking about his Full House co-star. At first, John didn’t believe the rumor that Bob had died because a fake story about John dying in a plane crash had swirled weeks earlier.
The Full House star, 60, reveals that he texted Bob, “Baby, you around?” Bob never texted back. Soon, John’s worst fear came true. He calls Bob’s death “personal, painful, and beyond belief.”
John adds, “When you lose a best friend, you lose a piece of your history. I feel lost. That’s not a good thing for me. In the past, feeling stripped of someone I loved made me want to join them. No way I’d ever try to overdose or blow my brains out, but I have a history of wanting that bad feeling of emptiness to go away fast. Not this time. No drugs, no booze, no bullsh*t.
The Big Shot actor admits everyone was in “disbelief” over Bob’s sudden death. “Bob was such a big part of our lives,” John continues. “No one can fathom life without him. It’s too soon to put that thought into words. In between the tears, there’s silence. It would be easier if Bob were here filling up all the empty spaces.”
Bob was found dead in his Ritz-Carlton hotel room in Florida on January 9, 2022. He was on a stand-up tour and had performed the night before. It was later determined that he died from blunt head trauma due to an accidental blow to the back of his head, an injury he likely sustained from a fall. He was 65.
January 2024 will mark two years since Bob’s passing. At Bob’s funeral, John delivered a touching eulogy about his friend. John is brutally honest in his memoir about how much he misses his best friend.
“I’m still not ready to accept that he’s gone. Not sure I ever will be,” John writes. “I try to imagine him still on the road, doing what he loves. He’s standing onstage, killing. Another two-hour set in front of a couple hundred of the luckiest people on the planet. They’re laughing so hard they weep. And just when they catch their breath, he grabs his guitar and slays with one of his musical closers. There’s an encore, and another, and another.
