Summary
Krampus 2 receives a story update from director Michael Dougherty after eight years. Released in 2015, the horror-comedy tells the story of a young boy whose bummer Christmas accidentally summons a demonic force Krampus, who punishes those who do not believe in the holiday spirit. Krampus was met with mixed reviews at the time but has had some viewers hoping for a sequel.
Now, Dougherty provides a glimpse into what Krampus 2 might look like. Speaking with Collider, the director mentioned that he has “an idea for a sequel” to Krampus. The idea would potentially involve “a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.” Check out the quote from Dougherty below:
“We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.”
Krampus 2 Is Still Not Confirmed But The Idea Is Enticing
Dougherty notably does not confirm the development of Krampus 2. While the movie had a moderately successful box office run, taking in $61.5 million worldwide against its estimated $15 million budget, it got mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. On the critic aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, Krampus scored a Fresh 66% with critics, whereas audiences rated it lower on average, giving it a 51% audience approval rate.
However, Krampus featured a shocking ending that sets up a potential sequel. It initially appears that the horror-comedy went in the conventional direction by allowing the tortured family to finally experience a serene Christmas gathering. However, the ending does not settle for such placidity, instead revealing through blurry distortion and a final camera pullback that the Engel family has been trapped inside a snow globe by the titular creature.
As per Dougherty’s idea, Krampus 2 could play with this idea of entrapment. While the sequel may not follow protagonist Max and his family directly, Krampus 2 could see another world of strangers trapped inside a snowglobe or other Krampus-controlled device. Either way, Dougherty is percolating ideas for an interesting sequel to Krampus.
