James Gunn and Peter Safran will begin shepherding in a new era for DC Studios with Superman: Legacy. In the comments of a recent Instagram post, Gunn revealed how the duo will handle the tone of their new DC Universe.
Ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, certain fans have worried that every film under their banner would have the same tone as the Guardians of the Galaxy films Gunn is most known for. However, according to the Superman: Legacy director, the tone of the DC Universe “will shift from project to project and will reflect the unique sensibilities of the filmmakers involved.”
This is certainly the best move. Despite what some fans may say, the best part of the DC Universe is the diverse array of stories able to be told depending on the creative team involved. If this is the mindset James Gunn and Peter Safran will have in helming DC Studios, fans can rest assured that Superman: Legacy and every other DCU project is in good hands.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
