Summary
With the second season of Amazon Prime’s acclaimed television adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series recently concluding, fans of the beloved franchise can explore the deep world-building of the iconic fantasy in its comic book adaptation. As Dynamite prepares to publish a comic book adaptation of the second book in the series, The Great Hunt, now is the perfect time to catch up on the original graphic novels.
While Amazon’s version of The Wheel of Time is visually stunning and wonderfully accurate to its source lore, the graphic novel adaptation of the series is even more faithful to Jordan’s original text.
Dabel Brothers Productions produced a gorgeous adaptation of The Wheel of Time prequel novel, New Spring, written by Chuck Dixon with art by Mike Miller and Etienne St Laurent, before producing a 35-issue adaptation of the first book in the series, The Eye of the World, also written by Dixon with art by Chase Conley and others.
Eye Of The World Offers In-Depth World Building The Show Doesn’t
Fans of either the book or television The Wheel of Time series know that Robert Jordan’s impressive 14-book fantasy adventure is rich with fascinating world-building and deep lore, centered around the Karaethon Cycle and the Dragon Reborn. Following the adventures of Rand, Perrin, Moiraine, Egwene, Nynaeve, Lan, Mat, and Loial is a true joy for anyone who begins their exploration into the world of The Wheel of Time. Dixon’s 35-issue adaptation of The Eye of The World offers a truly in-depth exploration of Jordan’s brilliantly crafted tale, from the Two Rivers’ Trolloc Attack to Rand al’Thor’s “defeat” of the Dark One in the first novel.
One important difference to note between the comic and the TV series is that the graphic novel adaptation has little of the amazing racial diversity that Amazon’s adaptation beautifully offers. Besides the lack of diversity, the comic book is an amazing option for fans of the TV series who are not interested in reading all 14 novels in Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series. Many may still want a visual medium with which to explore the world of Two Rivers, Tar Valon, and the political intrigues of the Aes Sedai and their influential White Tower. The Eye of the World covers everything that happened in the first season of the TV series, with a ton of additional detailed information on the characters’ relationships and origins.
Fans Of Moiraine And Lan Should Read New Spring
For anyone who is a fan of Moiraine, Lan, and Siuan Sanche – and really, who isn’t – the comic book adaptation of the prequel novel New Spring is a perfect place to get a deeper understanding of their history and relationships. The adaptation of New Spring, which is eight issues long, starts near the end of the oft-mentioned Aiel War and is mainly set in Tar Valon, 20 years before the beginning of The Eye of the World. It follows Moiraine and Siuan’s journey to becoming full-fledged Aes Sedai, Moiraine meeting Lan and making him her warder, and Moiraine and Siuan investigating the Dragon Reborn prophecy.
As fans of The Wheel of Time are waiting for the third season of Amazon Prime’s breathtaking adaptation of the beloved series, they should seriously consider picking up the graphic novel adaptations of New Spring and The Eye of the World, especially as Dynamite is getting ready to debut the first issue of their adaptation of the second novel in the series, The Great Hunt.
Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time: The Great Hunt #1 from Dynamite debuts November 15th, 2023.
