Bettersten Wade, has retained civil rights activist and attorney Ben Crump to help seek justice for her son after he was buried in an unmarked grave by Jackson police months after he was killed by a patrol car.

As previously reported, Bettersten Wade shared her story about her son’s death in Jackson, Mississippi, when she learned that he was struck by a patrol car and buried in an unmarked grave by authorities. In a statement, attorney Crump said he demands transparency, justice, and accountability for Dexter Wade.
“Dexter’s story is a living nightmare for any mother. The secrecy surrounding his death, the alleged concealment of vital information, and the callous burial in a pauper’s field without his mother’s knowledge are not just oversights – they are a grave miscarriage of justice. The fact that Dexter’s tragic end involved an off-duty police officer only deepens the wounds of this community and raises troubling questions about the integrity of those entrusted with upholding the law,” he wrote.

“In the face of this tragedy, we stand with Bettersten Wade and demand transparency, accountability, and justice for Dexter. Every life deserves dignity, and every grieving mother deserves the truth. We will not rest until the full truth is revealed, and those responsible for this injustice are held accountable. Dexter’s memory will not be forgotten, and his story will fuel our fight for a fair and just society where every life is valued and protected, regardless of who they are.”
Bettersten Wade said her son went missing on March 5 and reported him missing a few days later when he didn’t return to her home. Despite giving police officers Dexter’s information, they told Wade they had no information about his whereabouts. One hundred seventy-two days later, Wade learned that her son died after being struck by a patrol car, and authorities buried him in an unmarked grave. She believes the timeline of her son’s death doesn’t make sense because it would be impossible for Dexter to walk from her house to the interstate within a half hour.
“I just feel like something else must have happened. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Bettersten said to NBC News. She also paid a $250 fee to claim her son’s body, and it took her several weeks to figure out his final resting place. Bettersten later learned authorities buried her son in a field at a penal farm under the number 672.
“Dexter, I want to tell you I am so sorry. I’m so sorry this happened to you. But mama didn’t know. Mama didn’t know,” she exclaimed when visiting the gravesite. The family is in the process of removing his body from the gravesite for he can have a proper funeral and burial so loved ones can pay a visit.
