JAY-Z is opening up live never before in a new interview with Gayle King for CBS Mornings, and finally addressing all of the “scrutiny” he and Beyoncé‘s daughter Blue Ivy constantly faces. He admits, their first-born girl was “born into a life she didn’t ask for.”

In addition to speaking with King about the conception of his infamous Roc-A-Fella hand sign, JAY-Z, 53, also spoke about his 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy. He not only revealed what he and Bey, 42, were initially planning on naming her (which was “Brooklyn), but Hov also revealed that Blue finally thinks he’s cool after “frontin’ on [him]” for a while.
The two eventually shift gears to reflect on how proud Hov is of his daughter, and how much she has blossomed since birth to now joining her superstar mom on stage during the ‘Renaissance‘ tour, which concluded earlier this month.

While making note of all the “scrutiny” Blue has faced, JAY-Z prefaced it and said she’s made him so proud and has been “reclaiming her power” from critics as she joins her mom on tour, especially whenever performing all out for Bey’s song “My Power.”
Hov said, “What makes me super proud — and I still get goosebumps seeing her walk onstage — is because Blue’s been born into a life she didn’t ask for. Since she was born, she’s been in scrutiny and public eye, and everyone having an opinion — even [on] a little girl, how she keeps her hair. So for her to be on that stage and reclaim her power, and the song is called ‘My Power’ … you can’t write a better script.”
He added, “And then watching her grow in it … You know, she came out — 80,000 people — she’s 11, so she’s nervous.” Gayle chimed in and said she “didn’t look nervous,” but Hov admitted, “I know her, so I know how nervous she was. I know how frightened she was.” However, he said she was still eager to perform from the first tour stop and on, watching her mom’s dancers practice, with her following suit.

As mentioned, Blue Ivy has been subjected to criticism as early as her coming out of infancy to being a toddler. At the time, she became a target of anti-Black commentary stemming from her hair and hair texture. In 2014, even though like Hov said, Blue was “born into a life she didn’t ask for,” someone decided to create a petition calling for Blue’s famous parents to “comb her hair.”
In addition to Blue, who was born in January 2012, JAY-Z and Beyoncé share 6-year-old twins, daughter Rumi and son Sir Carter, whom they welcomed in June 2017.
