Woah! J. Cole is admitting that he doesn’t actually charge artists for features. He claims that his famous bar about charging $2,000 per word was “just a flex,” and that he doesn’t “even charge for the verse.”

While appearing on a recent episode of Lil Yachty‘s ‘A Safe Place‘ podcast, the Fayetteville emcee opened up about his music and his collaborative process. During the interview, the “No Role Modelz” rapper was asked about what he charges for a hit J. Cole feature, and that’s when he admitted that he actually hands out verses for free (if he chooses to work with you) and that his bar was “just a flex.”

Cole said, “Yo, bro, it’s just a bar, bro. Like, a lot of my bars be really on point but man that’s just a flex. I’m not gonna charge a n***a $2,000 a word. I don’t even charge n***as for the verse, I’m doing this sh*t because I’m inspired to do it. And like, that’s a cool way for me to address, like, there’s a thing going on if n***as think I get like $2,000 a word. Like, bro … Yeah, I’m not charging n***as because I just want to be on the song. I wouldn’t do that.”

Now, for those that don’t recall, back in 2019, Cole previously claimed on Young Thug‘s song “The London,” featuring himself and Travis Scott, that he charges two stacks for a verse.

On the song he rapped, “How could you come up out your face / And say I ain’t the hardest n***a you done ever heard? / I left a flock of rappers dead and buried / A verse from me is like eleven birds / Just did the math, that’s like two thousand dollars every word / I’m on the verge, I’ll beat the charge / I killed some n***as and I walked away from it / Then I observe, just how you curve / Then told the n***a that they gotta wait for it.”

Following Cole’s bar, the internet went crazy believing every artist that he collaborated with and gave a verse to got invoiced for $2,000 per word. Back in May, Cole hopped on Lil Durk‘s song “All My Life,” and social media launched a theory that Cole charged the Chicago rapper $978,000 for his verse. Shutting down the claims before Cole’s new admission, his manager, Ibrahim Hamad, responded to a headline and called “Cap” on the rumors.
