Summary

Marvel Studios may bring back the original six Avengers for a new movie, potentially leading to exciting new solo adventures for Captain America. The upcoming Disney+ series Echo marks the first project under the new Marvel Spotlight banner, allowing for more grounded and character-driven stories, independent of other MCU projects. Marvel Spotlight provides an opportunity for the MCU to explore Captain America’s past and potentially bring back the Howling Commandos, offering a deeper exploration of his time in World War II.

Chris Evans’ Captain America is one of the most developed Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, but there is an exciting part of his story missing, which could now finally appear. Evans started his journey in the MCU through the World War II film Captain America: The First Avenger, with his subsequent Captain America movies and MCU appearances all being set in the present day after Steve Rogers was frozen on ice for decades. Evans’ Captain America had one of the MCU’s best arcs, which was concluded beautifully with Avengers: Endgame’s final scene of Steve and Peggy Carter finally getting their dance.

However, a recent report has claimed that Marvel Studios is looking at bringing back the original six Avengers for a new movie, and if Evans were to return to the MCU as Captain America, the actor would have some exciting stories to adapt in possible new solo adventures. While there are several stories from the comics that the MCU could use for a possible full-on return of Evans as Steve Rogers, the MCU has already presented a perfect storytelling opportunity for his next adventure. There is a missing piece in Captain America’s MCU story, and a new reveal, added with Evans’ potential return, could lead to it finally being told.

The MCU’s New Marvel Spotlight Could Tell The Howling Commandos’ Story

The Howling Commandos in the MCU

The upcoming release of Disney+’s Echo series will mark a major change for the MCU, as it will be the first project under the new Marvel Spotlight banner. Marvel explained the reasoning behind the creation of its new banner, revealing that it will allow the MCU to tell “more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen.” These stories will also not require viewers to have watched any other MCU projects, with Marvel Spotlight projects working by themselves. Check out Marvel’s full statement regarding Echo and the new Marvel Spotlight banner below:

“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

Marvel Spotlight allows the MCU to bring back Steve Rogers and the Howling Commandos. The team was active during World War II, including members like Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, and more. Marvel Spotlight brings along exciting possibilities for non-linear MCU stories, and a street-level tale with the Howling Commandos during the war would be a great use of the new label. Marvel Spotlight was also used in the comics to fill in gaps in the history of certain characters, and as Captain America went to the present right after only one movie, a project with the Howling Commandos would allow for a deeper exploration of Rogers’ past.

Why The MCU Needs More Of The Howling Commandos

Howling Commandos in Captain America

Besides just filling in the gaps of Captain America’s time in the war, which went by too quickly in the MCU, a return of the Howling Commandos is exciting in the team’s own right. While Captain America joining the Howling Commandos would be great, the MCU doing its own version of the beloved HBO miniseries Band of Brothers is exciting enough, as a dark and gritty war epic set in the MCU would bring a new side to the universe. It remains to be seen what projects Marvel Spotlight will include, but judging by Echo’s tone, a return of Captain America and Howling Commandos can’t be discarded.
