Nintendo is set to bring the enchanting world of Hyrule to the big screen, as the company has announced a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, one of its most beloved video game franchises. Helming this highly-anticipated project is director Wes Ball, known for his work on The Maze Runner series and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

The Legend of Zelda movie is born from the creative partnership between Shigeru Miyamoto, the iconic game designer behind Zelda, and producer Avi Arad, whose track record with blockbuster hits is well-established, particularly in the superhero genre with the Spider-Man movies. Their shared vision for the movie was revealed on Nintendo’s Twitter account.

“I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega-hit films,” Miyamoto wrote on Twitter. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

What to expect from Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda movie

A collaborative venture between Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., The Legend of Zelda will see more than 50% of its financing provided by Nintendo. The film’s global distribution will be managed by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., marking a significant cross-industry effort to bring the beloved video game series to the big screen.

The Legend of Zelda is a high-fantasy adventure series that centers on the courageous hero Link, who battles the forces of evil to save Princess Zelda and the mystical land of Hyrule. The Nintendo franchise, known for its intricate puzzles, legendary items, and the fight against the dark lord Ganon, has captured the imaginations of gamers with its mix of exploration, action, and a timeless battle between light and darkness.

While there is no release date or production start date set for the live-action The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo’s recent foray into film with the animated Mario movie saw immense success, raking in over $1.36 billion worldwide at the box office. This financial triumph marks a significant achievement for the company, setting a high benchmark for future adaptations of its iconic franchises. Will The Legend of Zelda live up to Mario? Only time will tell.
