How The Incident Unfolded & What Sparked Senator Mullin’s Comments Toward Sean O’Brien
In footage of the hearing, chronicled by The Shade Room, Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin is seen sitting at a podium at the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing.
The clip begins as Sen. Mullins seemingly talks about himself, explaining that he works “pretty hard” and “pretty long hours.”
Then, he refers to a June tweet from Senate floor witness and president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters labor union, Sean O’Brien.
“‘Pretends like he’s self-made… what a clown, fraud. Always has been, always will be. Quit the tough guy act in these senate hearings. You know where to find me. Any place, Anytime, cowboy,” Mullins recites to the room.
The senator then adds, “Sir, this is a time. This is a place. If you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults [and] we can finish it here.”
O’Brien responds by telling Mullins, “That’s perfect.”
Then and there, Mullins and O’Brien agree to “do it now.” Furthermore, Mullins even instructs O’Brien.
“Well, stand your butt up then,” Mullins says.
How Bernie Sanders Quelled The Potential Tussle Between The Two Men
As the senator and O’Brien get up from their seats, the entire room sounds off with interjections.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders then orders both men to “sit down” while reminding Mullins that he is a “United States senator. From there, Sanders orders the room to halt, reminding all attendees, “This is a hearing.”
“And God knows, the American people have had enough…” Sanders adds.
Mullin and O’Brien begin to bicker back and forth as Sanders works hard to get the hearing back on track. According to AP News, the men’s exchange lasted around six minutes.
