Fast X and The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier once pitched a Star Wars series to Lucasfilm inspired by the classic Japanese “Lone Wolf and Cub” film series long before The Mandalorian was made. The filmmaker revealed this bit of information during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He said:
“I had [a dream Star Wars project] a long time ago when I came to them and pitched, ‘We should do a Star Wars TV show conceived as a lone wolf and cub.’ They said, ‘We don’t know if it’s a great idea. We’ll get back to you with this idea.’”
It’s interesting to see how things have changed over the years. Lucasfilm has become a little more open to ideas that expand the universe, but years ago it seemed like they just wanted to stick with stories that were heavily connected to the legacy characters.
I love what Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been doing with The Mandalorian, but had this concept has been carried out before that, I wonder what kind of story it would’ve told and how fans would’ve reacted to it.
Leterrier also went on to say he was interested in exploring events prior to 1977’s A New Hope and, potentially, a Boba Fett movie.
Leterrier then revealed that Fast X does have a couple of Star Wars sound effects hidden in the final cut of the film. He said: “We’re all trying, in a way, to make a Star Wars movie. Even in my last movie, Fast X, I put TIE fighter sounds in it. Just cannot help myself.”
Maybe one day Leterrier will get the opportunity to play in the Star Wars sandbox, but all the projects that he wanted to do in the space are now being done.
