Jason Momoa hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend and used his opening monologue to reaffirm his passion for playing Aquaman. This comes a month before he’ll reprise the role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Committed to the Role That Made Him an A-List Star

On SNL, Momoa told audiences “I love being Aquaman because I love the ocean. It’s true. Growing up all I wanted to do was be a marine biologist, which makes sense because I’m built like a scientist. The problem was that even though I was born in Hawaii, I grew up in Iowa, which isn’t really known for its oceans.”

Momoa remains intensely committed to the role that made him an A-list star. It’s clear from his self-deprecating humor that he feels immense gratitude for how Aquaman changed his career.

Grateful for the Opportunity Aquaman Provided

Momoa added: “Then one day, I was sitting at home watching a movie called In God’s Hands. Which was shot in Hawaii and I saw my cousin, Brian L. Keaulana, towing into these 50-ft waves and I was like, ‘What the hell am I still doing here?’ So I went back to Hawaii to surf with my family and I ended up on a TV show called, Baywatch.”

Momoa first played the King of Atlantis in 2016’s Batman v Superman. But it was 2018’s Aquaman solo movie that cemented him as the perfect actor for the previously scoffed-at hero. Earning over $1 billion globally, Aquaman transformed the character’s reputation. Now he’s considered one of DC’s coolest superheroes.

Preparing for One Final Adventure as Aquaman

The actor is now preparing to slip back into the famous orange-and-green outfit for Lost Kingdom. With director James Wan returning, the movie hopes to deliver stunning underwater visuals on par with the first film.

The sequel will bring Aquaman to the mysterious lost land of Necrus, in what is slated to be Jason Momoa’s final outing as the aquatic superhero that propelled him to stardom. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but if Momoa’s evident passion for the role is any clue, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom looks to be an epic, franchise-ending chapter not to miss when it hits theaters next month.

This last adventure in Atlantis marks the conclusion of the current DC extended universe as Warner Bros. prepares to hit the reset button and usher in a new era for DC Studios.
